Chi Cheng, bassist of the Deftones, has died.

I'm not much of a Deftones fan, but I like some of their stuff. I was listening to a live performance of "My Own Summer" this evening and noticed some comments along the lines of "RIP Chi." A bit of web-searching has confirmed that Chi Cheng, their bassist, died at 3am today.

rest in peace, man.

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emergency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight.You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. You are correct, apparently: sounds like the crash was in 2008. He was showing impovement recently, being able to "move his legs on command" and other things, but I guess it wasn't enough.

That's incredibly sad news to return home to today. Was lucky enough to see Deftones a couple of times before Chi's accident. Bless him

Underrated band, and one I really should listen to more. They are (or they at least used to be) lumped in with the whole 'nu-metal': but that term is really a disservice to a band that has throughout its career managed to (tastefully and organically, I should add) make music combining elements of metal, punk, shoegaze, dub, hip-hop, electronic music, etc.

Listening to White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist today, I could hear just how big a part of their sound Cheng's bass has been.

deftones were my favorite band through most of high school, its funny how musical tastes can change. anyway, even though i dont listen to their music much anymore, this is still very sad news.

chi has been in this coma for quite some time, so in a way its a blessing that he could finally pass on. god bless him and his family.

This. I'm so bummed out.

I'd also like to agree with Treefingers' post; I still enjoy even their new record and it's a testament to the band how they've been able to transform themselves over time yet always put out quality releases.

Very sad news. I have been a huge Deftones fan for about the past 6 years..and while I know Chi had not been well for a long time, it still hits hard to hear this news. My condolences go out to his family and the band..I hope one day, they might release Eros, so we can all hear the last songs they played together.

I'm sure it'll happen. If nothing else, they could use presumably make it a fundraiser for his foundation. to quote the wiki: The band still intends to release Eros at some point.

I was never really into Deftones, though as a kid, I remember hearing quite a bit of them. A few of my friends were really into them at the time. But damn, that's tough. Dealing with a loss always is.
