what?
Code confirmed: 6 9 9 7 4 2 (From NPR) positioning unknown yet.
Took it out of the string waiting to be put back into the right slot.

it's the "taking the piss" method, as some might say

Ok....since we haven't received any new clues since the 23rd, I'm going to share my thoughts on this thing. Hopefully it's not just incredibly wild speculation...but I'd like to see what others outside IRC think...they haven't been too receptive, but I have a feeling that will change as the length of time since the last broadcasted clue grows.

The theory:

First, the NPR clue. It broke the pattern of the clues being announced with the --/--/XX/--/--/-- track names. Why? I think it was deliberate. If it wasn't, NPR likely would have tweeted the track name, or updated the All Songs Considered site with it at some point over the last two days.

Regarding that, I think cydoniac (from the 2020k page and IRC) is correct in assuming that the NPR sequence was backwards and actually fits in the fifth slot like this:

------/------/717228/936557/247996/519225

I believe broadcasting it backwards and without a track name was intended to make us start speculating and discover the pattern...the descending digit in the ones place (8,7,6,5), and the repeating digits in the hundreds and tens places.

So, if that's the case, we can infer the following about the missing pieces...

-The first set ends in 0 or 10, and the second ends in 9
-With the repeating digits, the first set ends in either 110 (or XX0, if it's just 0,9,8,7,6,5), and the second in XX9 (X = repeating digits)

So that gives us: ---XX0/---XX9/717228/936557/247996/519225

Without the repeating digits, that leaves over 99 billion possibilities (99999 squared)

BUT, if we assume the XXs could be 11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99, or 00, that narrows the field considerably. There's also the (very distinct) possibility that there's some other pattern I'm missing about the first three digits.

Perhaps we could condense the list of codes to a brute-forceable quantity. Whether we use that list to search Google, a public torrent site like tpb, or elsewhere is debatable...but I think without any other information this is the general direction we should be heading in.

Music is math, right?

Or maybe I'm just frustrated and have gone off the deep end.

I haven't read the whole thread yet so excuse me if this has been mentioned already. From the looks of it the randomness of the numbers seem to be low. Several times numbers are repeated after each other and it seems to me that this could actually be encoded English text in which each digit corrosponds to a certain letter. For example the digit string "7228" might be an encoded 'been', 'keen', 'seen', 71722 could be 'amass' and so forth. I'm trying to match words in my wordlist by using regular expressions. It's hard to infer a full sentence from the encrypted string using this method because it is unclear where word boundaries start and end, but it's a viable alternative if you ask me. Has anyone tried this yet?

You have ;)

Seriously, I really doubt so far that BOC would transmit a code that needs to be so randomly inverted, what if the NPR one is in the right order and all the other ones are reversed? No more crazy an idea, right? I suspect that more details will surface, and that the timing is just intended to let the news pass and disseminate and then resume shortly.

So in short, I strongly believe that the whole reverted number theory is tosh ;)

I think cfish is absolutely right in saying that npr not posting the track name / code position is intentional, they would have updated something by this point. Part of me thinks that if the 4th code is indeed supposed to be reversed, the audio would have also been reversed or something, but idk. I do think that at this point we should definitely start trying to match the pattern, and reversing the npr code does give us quite a pattern.
with what you proposed there are 100 million possibilities for the remaining positions. It is something easily brute forced, but generating all the possibilities is useless unless we know where the keyhole for our key is. so to speak.

If you think its a substitution filter then you look at number frequencies and guess at ETAOIN SHRDLU - english letter frequencies. It will probably be a two-digit thing if that is the case.

i tend to agree about the NPR code, i think the omission of the 'xxx's is a sign that we need to work out the link for ourselves.

but i'm not sure about including a '0' in the prediction, as there have been no zeros used so far, i.e. it could be a '1' and still follow the pattern, or if the numbers describe co-ordinates for a shape (hexagon), it could plausibly go 6, 7, 8, 7, 6, 5

also all the codes each have at least 4 unique digits so far

I fully agree with that. The consequence is that it's unlikely an encrypted thing where you need a certain key. That makes life easier, because it's easy to guess some context and see if the decrypting patterns match.

Another thing: we can easily miss one or two keys. I mean, maybe today a key was broadcasted somehow, but nobody realized. Still this seems to be properly organized with contacts to record stores and radio stations. I wonder if boc/warp/mdg/whoever follows the internet platforms. And, in case, if they would interact.

They do, mdg here, and joyrex over at watmm even if they might claim (or perhaps genuinely) not knowing about the details they are no doubts the ears that listens. It's a dirty job, mdg probably deserves a group hug for putting up with some of the stuff here
