First IDM you ever heard?

Recently I found out that almost everyone starts there journey through IDM by Aphex...but wat`s your story?

Yeah, I`m kinda lame...I started with Come to Daddy.My best friends showed me the video and I was hooked

Forgemasters_Track With No Name [12"] 1989. That's the first release with the name 'Warp'. But at that time it was in collaboration with 'Outher Rhythm'.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 in my case, thanks to an old schoolfriend. Kinda steamrollered from there.

Well...I asked a good friend (my sisters ex) if he knew music like aphex

.He introduced me to BoC (without knowing).

I had seen 'Come to Daddy' on tv a couple of times, so I went out and bought the vhs and the ep. What's really embarassing was how long it took for me to realize that "idm" extended beyond Aphex.

I read an intriguing review of MHTRTC and loved the cover. That was more than enough to make me buy it. Took me a couple of listens to really *get* it, then I was hooked.

Very similar story with Autechre and buying Amber just because I found the sleeve beautiful.

Not everyone started out with Aphex Twin, their was alot more going before he showed up in the IDM scene.

I'd say the first thing that I heard that could be considered IDM, would be those early Tortoise remix lps. Oh and Fridge 'Sevens and Twelves' had some IDMy stuff on there. I have to say though the term IDM seems to be used rather freely even though most of it isn't dance music, intelligent or otherwise.

For me it was Brian Eno's 'Apollo' soundtrack and Moby's 'Play'. Aphex's 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92' followed shortly thereafter...

Boards of Canada's Geogaddi in late 2003... it exposed me to so many genres of music I never new existed (eno, autechre, the whole ambient genre, etc, etc.)
