Any other BoC fans with Synesthesia?

There exists a conditon called Synesthesia which I in fact have, whereby I associate images and colours with things that do not normally have them. There are many different types. For example, I see each number in my head as having a different colour, and sometimes "personality". However, I also picture music visually in my mind when listening to it. Each song has different shapes, colours and tones represented within my mind's eye. One of the reasons I was so fascinated by Boards of Canada when first hearing it was due to the enormous variety of different colours I saw within my mind. Synesthesia is actually more common than most would think, and people often don't know that they have it as they have never really thought any differently of it. Just wondering if it affects anyone here, because even I myself find it fascinating. Yes I have this to a degree . I can hear sounds , see and apply images to them . This is one of the main reasons Boards Of Canada resonates with me the way it does . I work in film and vfx and i have been translating this Synesthesia to BOC for awhile now .

This is an experiment I did in 06 that I am now uprezing and turning in to a fully organic video compilation of there music , I hope to re-release these new videos in line with the new album release if its finished in time .

I apologize for the shitty quality (daily motion what was i thinking ) im going to reupload this sample to vimeo soon and shortly after that release the full series of videos i have done .

Funny, I usually don't look past the sticky threads.... But I did and I saw this. Yes, I have synaesthesia. I was also diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. I've been in and out of hospitals my whole life. I would like to think that I'm pretty functional at this point, although I still have pretty bad breakdowns at least twice a year. I've been through all the meds and I've had bad adverse reactions too them or they just don't work at all, so I don't take that shit anymore. I just go with the flow which is always psychedelic and often marked with bouts of sheer terror. They're not sure if my schizophrenia brings out the synaesthesia or vice versa, since it's been like this ever since I can remember. If it wasn't for the paranoid part, I would probably be fine all the time, I think. But the paranoia throws everything into something that would resemble a super bad acid trip. Luckily I have a great outlet thru art and music which I create compulsively. I like to tell people that I'm not crazy, just creative. And I like to think I'm correct in saying that. Whatever. Music in general has a serious effect on my mental state and Boards of Canada, in particular, is a great stress reliever. It centers me and helps me stay focused on positive things. Even their darker material seems to soothe things. And thank god for that.

I have experienced what I'd say is 'mild' synaesthesia. Mainly in relation to the 'vibe' I get from words.

yep. mild sound->color and moderate motion->sound. I hear things 'almost' clear as day when I look at most gifs/any silent movement. It doesn't happen a lot outside when I'm on the computer though. Sound to color is more like meshes of color I guess rather than vivid ribbons and shit like I hear described by others, although I do see things like that once in a blue moon, usually when I listen to live performances like concertos. (those get intense) I don't think about it as much as I used to anymore and it feels like I'm being subjected to it less and less. Other than those two, I have some weird connections that aren't necessarily based around sensory things (not including smell). I've associated genders with letters since I was little, and recently I've been noticing some smell related things, like when I get split second whiffs of smells I can't describe, I relate it to words or letters. Also, I have no clue what this is, but when I watch movies, in the back of my head I unconsciously "type" out random words over and over that don't have anything to do with the movie. for example, when I saw the hobbit in theaters, in the back of my head I kept seeing variations of the word "cryptic" typed out letter by letter over and over. It was very strange but for some reason it felt right. Like I said, I don't know what that is or if I even have synesthesia outside of the top two I mentioned. And then I do some even stranger things such as when I play my violin sometimes I see things in my peripherals and sometimes the notes in the music branch out around me, although they aren't visible i guess? It's more like I know they are there.

OH and yeah boc is the shit with sound related synesthesia, among other things. A lot of their songs have personalities for me, which I just figured out is more common than I thought. Music is Math is really brave and Hey Saturday Sun just wants to be left alone. Christ! I sound a little crazy

And I agree 100%. So many different personalities. My favorite song Seeya Later is totally aloof and completely content to be that way.

I think I may have it, but it seems like it would be a difficult thing to "diagnose". Mainly, some music/songs have "colors" to them in my mind. There are a few specific songs that really bring out that quality, such as "Kid for Today" (that song is clearly dark purple, duh). I find a lot of their other songs ("An Eagle In Your Mind", "Julie and Candy") to be very hypnotic and almost meditative in their structure. And most of their songs will conjure up something in my mind, like a mini-movie or some sort of scenery. "Left Side Drive" always makes me think of driving into the city late at night for some reason. Even before I saw the video for "Dayvan Cowboy", I always associated that song with the ocean and surfing. "Constants are Changing" makes me think of playing in the snow as a kid, with the sun shining off of the snow and blinding you. I think a lot of people with synesthesia gravitate towards music like Boards of Canada because it tends to stimulate that part of your brain.

That sounds like synesthesia to me. And I also have "movies" when listening to music at times.

I don't work with colors at all, i even dream a lot in black and white, but I do have some subconscious designed patterns for some 'thoughts', for instance, I always visualize the calendar as a circle, although not a perfect one, if i'm July I feel like i'm reaching the top part of the circle when the first day of July marks the second half of the year.

I thought I had synesthesia, as saw these textures (like leather or insides of suitcases, whatever) in my mind when listening to music, but apparently thats just how my brain deals with sound.

I do like thinking about music visually, or mixing different media together, but I thought synesthesia was more of a medical condition than just a passing interest.
Like everyone will associate music with different emotions, places, faces, colours etc.

I see music all the time, but didnt even know about my condition until hearing about synesthesia and researching it myself, before then I just thought it was normal and everyone else had it but now it makes sense to me that I love music so much. It's stimulates more then one of my senses.
