Rue the Whirl (I still think MHTRTC is perfect, but its the weakest link to me)
a couple of the vignettes from the back half of TCH don't do much for me, they seem sort of just there

I'd say I really love Old Tunes across the board, but a couple things are too weird/dissonant for me (Music for Pylons comes to mind in particular)

Why all the Zoetrope dislike?

It sounds like it'd be in Reading Rainbow or some shit. Thought BoC fans were all about that quality.

The only BoC track I'd go so far as to say I dislike is The Beach At Redpoint - that opening synth just sounds so cheesy to me, like it belongs in the intro of Count Duckula.

I used to not like An Eagle In Your Mind very much but after listening to it a lot recently it's clicked into place and I really enjoy it now.

you can tell alot about someone from the BoC track they choose to hate on. I honestly have never heard a BoC track that I hated, I myself, have a pretty openended appreciation of music and if I HAD to pick a track I'll pick my least favorite, which is Peacock tail. (except for when those voices kick in, then it gets good)

That's exactly it with BoC's music. The songs are more then just one composition of sounds and more often then not there is quite alot of diversity in a song. When I first started listening to them, I would skip over the harsher sounding songs, they were very difficult to hear and kinda messed up, too much for my virgin mind at the time. I stuck with the songs that really grabbed my attention initially and over time was forced to listen to the others, as I had their entire discography. it's been about two years and now I've heard pretty much all I can as far as their main catalog and back catalog go.

Now I actually love their harsh, hard hitting messed up songs the most, that beautiful tune that plays at the end of Basefree will only be heard if you take the time to listen to the track or if you listen to triangles and rhombuses but irrelvance aside, I've grown a great appreciation for ALL of their music. Call me a heretic. The beautiful melancholy synth in Twoism that "whines" in a beautiful skin crawling way. Chinook as well, has some very beautiful ensambles. Dark and kind of grotesque, but beautiful. because sometimes, if you wait and your patient and you LISTEN to the music they create you will find more then just what appears on the surface or in the beginning of the track. The songs can take you to different places from when the track first started playing.

To anyone who hates their harsher darker sound, there is beauty to be found beyond some of the darkest places you fear to tread and THAT is something I learned from Boards of Canada. Literally changed my life and I'm sure alot of others as well. My favorite band.

I find 1969 a bit boring tbh. other than the vocoded bits it just seems like a parody of a boc track rather than a genuine one

Just need to vouch for my love of Basefree, Rue The Whirl and (especially) Zoetrope because those tracks get way too much flack. Rock on lil' tunes!

ps. can't remember if I have mentioned this in the past but I could do without June 9th.

Pretty wild that you mentioned Count Duckula.... I haven't come across too many people that remember it. It's my favorite cartoon. The theme song is quite cheesy but it's sort of nostalgic to me. I also love The Beach At Redpoint... To each his own

I also saw someone say they had distaste for Iced Cooley and 1969 which kind of blows my mind.

Oh and someone said they can't stand The Devil Is In the Details... Funny, at first I felt the same way as it gets creepily under your skin, but it really settled there for me and is one of my favorites now.

I think June 9th is great... don't see people mention it much. Tracks like June 9th, Red Moss, and Nlogax stand out as being danceable and reminiscent of video game music, which I like.

As soon as I saw the topic Zoetrope came to my mind. I have nothing in particular against it, it's just that I've found myself always skipping it. Curious that many others mentioned it.

Wow. The Beach At Redpoint is my favourite track on Geogaddi. The opening water ripple and synth line is anything but cheesy to me, I find the whole thing very atmospheric. It all has quite a psychedelic feel to it.

I used to actually like Zoetrope quite a lot, but it is very repetitive and stripped down, no real layers to speak of, essentially the same synth line throughout. I think it would've benefitted from being at least a minute shorter. The track which doesn't do a lot for me on that EP, which may come as a surprise to a lot of people, is Amo Bishop Roden. Seems to be very popular, but I've never been able to get into it. I find the main synth line borderline grating. I don't dislike the track at all, but Kid For Today and the title track are 10/10 for me, in comparison.

I don't hate The Beach at Redpoint, but I really appreciated that Count Duckula reference.

I know there's some songs I don't like as much as others but I'm coming up with a blank here. I think Rue the Whirl is a cool song, but I tend to skip it because it gives me that weird feeling like when you have a fever and your mind goes in weird thought spirals, same with Gyroscope, which I think sounds amazing, but it gives me that feeling too. Sort of creeps me out. Bad fever tripping.

I wonder, could that be a mental association with the track titles? "Whirl" and "Gyroscope" both suggest spinning, or spiraling. I'm really interested in those associations we make, whether consciously or not.

Least favourite track? For some reason, I'm really not very fond of the three penultimate tracks on Music Has the Right to Children; for some reason, that stretch sort of feels like an anticlimax. Thing is, they're not weak tracks; they just feel colder than the previous ones. Fortunately One Very Important Thought leaves a sweet, refreshing aftertaste. I love it.
