Modern artists with a nostalgic sound? BoC, Stereolab, ...

Post by egbdf »

For a class I'm writing a paper on music with nostalgic elements. So far, I've got BoC, with their 70's/80's TV sounds, and Stereloab, with their lounge music influences.

Preferably someone who has some interviews I can find where they might mention these influences?

Thanks

look up the british label "ghost box" and the artistic concept of "hauntology" or "retro-futurism" hope those help.

In another way, Grouper. Her music doesn't hearken back to any particular period as such, but Liz makes use of very lo-fi recording / production techniques to make her music sound like a sort of mysterious found artefact.

Definitely have to second Broadcast, too. Especially their collaboration with the Focus Group (a guy who himself is heavily involved with Ghost Box, I think he might be the founder).

I guess on a similar note to (particularly) Broadcast and Stereolab, bands like Laika and Pram have done similar stuff.

I also want to mention Hype Williams (they've mess around with their identity a few times, so they've released stuff under other names). Their stuff occupies a similar space to Boards of Canada and hauntology (intentional lo-fi / samples alluding to childhood, specific periods of the recent past, etc.), but with a more absurd sense of humour / irony.

(released as Dean Blunt, ft. Inga Copeland)

In this interview, Dean Blunt talks about how his relationship with music is largely based around memory (about 1:20 in), which could be useful.

I do not feel Stereolab are nostalgic in any way.

They have lounge influences, sure, but they're pushed to such a futuristic place that they no longer feel old, or new, just kind of in some sort of suspended animation which transcends time.

that's why I love Dots & Loops, it's one of those few records which feels as old as it does new, it will constantly be relevant and interesting.

It's perfect.

I guess that wasn't the point of the thread, right? Just offering a dissenting opinion.

Nostalgic for me would be ... I guess artists of that actual particular time.

Maybe Tame Impala? The way they have a beautifully produced psychedelic haze sounds like it couldn't be from any other time than today though.

For some reason Grouper came into my mind too, even though it doesn't exactly fit the bill here. I think her sound has that feeling of nostalgia for a time that doesn't really exist rather than a specific time period.

I'm not too familiar with their stuff but maybe Ladytron? I'm thinking of that song Blue Jeans specifically. And Aislers Set, though they're more 60s.

Most of Animal Collective's stuff evoke strong nostalgia for me, also a lot of Ween reminds me of childhood but i guess that's probably because i grew up listening to them.

Kinda, Daft Punk harkens back to disco and pop, which isn't my era, even though I like listening to it. So yeah, they are masters of nostalgia, but for an older audience. I just like them 'cause they're funky as fuck!

The journalist Simon Reynolds has written an book that's (kind of) on this very subject, called Retromania. I can thoroughly recommend.
I've been a bit obsessed with stuff on Ghost Box recently, particularly The Advisory Circle - by far the best at pure 70s/80s public information film pastiche in my opinion.
Epic45 and July Skies are two more great bands that invoke a sense of nostalgia in their music, particularly regarding the countryside and nature.

I'd recommend Hood if you like those two bands. Similar Super-8-y pastoral, nostalgic feel -- kind of like some of the Bristol post-rock scene of the 90s in a way (Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone)...

Cheers, I've heard Hood mentioned in relation to them before, but haven't got round to checking them out yet.
What album do you reckon I should start with?

I'd chuck in a fairly unheralded one: Trans Am.

Anything off their Sex Change album evokes a period in the early 80s when rock bands (Rush, etc) started to embrace the synth. It evokes a similar era for me as 84 Pontiac Dream, which, I guess would be around 1984 :)

Com Truise has a sound that seems very reminiscent of the mid to late 1980's

The Budos Band also have a great funk/jazz/soul vibe that sounds straight out of the late 60's/early 70's

What's a "nostalgic sound" in this case? Everyone's "nostalgia" is subjective.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
