Some people aren't going to like this album. There are always some people who are disappointed in their latest release. They're pretty damn talented but it's not like they have supernatural powers that they can make music that every single person will like. I wouldn't either dismiss or praise it as their best at this point til we hear the whole thing properly though. I had to listen to Geogaddi a few times before I fell in love with it. It took me years with TCH (I liked it ok, I just wasn't amazed. Now I'm amazed by it).
Exactly, I have the same view here, Boards of Canada will still be god musician for me, even if the last album will sounds bad to me. Geogaddi and MHTRTC can't be appreciate with the first listen, they have to grow and reveal themself. They made incredibly well made work with their past albums, they have a real unique universe. Like Rainier said, they are just human, and they are trying things. It's better to just have something similar to TCH.
When I first listened Reach of the dead, I was just thinking, they are the only to be able to make music like that.

Yeah of course. Unfortunately it's something we all have to go through so not a taboo subject, a fitting description to the weird haunting yet uplifting uncontrollable lump in the through tear vibe it has after a few listens.
A skill in it's self to make simple things have life and feeling.
It's good but not great. I'll have to reserve my full judgement until I've listened to it properly and in context with the whole album. Reach for the Dead is top notch though. Makes me wonder how I would feel about Reach for the Dead if only heard a bootleg version of it.

Yep, how can you make such a judgement when the album has yet to be released, its just crazy, all the mumblings from those that attended the desert listening party have so far said it sounds great. Surely wait until you have heard it as it should be in its entirety before making churlish comments?
At the end of the day they've made the music they wanted to make, & if that doesn't sit comfortably with your personal vision of the path they should have taken, they're certainly not about to lose any sleep over it.
Of the scratchy lo-fi iPhone recordings I've dipped into, I can already tell that the one played at that Detroit festival is seriously badass... can't wait for a crisp hi-quality version pumping from my big bassy rig.
White Cyclosa was great, based on my one listen, online and in suboptimal conditions. John Carpenter filtered through Old Tunes. If you like BoC best when they are (arguably) "overdoing" it, it might not be for you. If TCH was your first love, this might be a challenging album - but as I posted in the TH thread, it FEELS like this album has something for everyone. I love TCH, but if it's what drew you in to their music, best of luck here.

Anyway, I like this track a lot - regardless of the general consensus being good or bad so far for the album, it's matching my expectations quite well and honestly, that's all I care about.
The ending of this tune I really like: what is that, some kind of trumpet? It works. Classic, broken, melancholic BoC to me, with a dash of Carpenter. It sounds like them, but different.

And with that I just think parts of the tracks were great but they never amounted to anything substantial. The songs are all really slow and they don't particularly go anywhere and when they do it isn't very interesting. Constants Are Changing is amazing though.

When I first heard this on the live stream I thought the intro arp sounded like a reggae tune (I was drunk and very tired) and the synth melody that starts at 37secs is practically one note off the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind communication melody.
