I can see how this could possibly be considered a waltz. Although waltzes usually involve an irregular time signature (triple-meter 3/4) and the "hesitation" you are thinking of is more involving the dance and not the music. this is modern day stutter-step and yes j-dilla didnt invent it, but neither did boards. Its not a style they have used recently at all and i dont see why they would all of a sudden incorporate it when its already been done heavily more than a decade ago.

the song is in 3/4. genre names don't matter. boc have done effects with time shift and lagging beats before. nothing is new, everything is old.

This track is really going to surprise people when they hear it all "cleaned" me thinks, or I'll be surprised. Those dueling melodies and stalking bass/harsh snare half way through are amazing. Beautiful dissonance and all that; it takes a wee bit of effort on the listeners part I guess.

I can say Boc have never committed anything like this to record though, at least to my ears.

a girl got the hell out of there when this was playing. you can hear the little building blocks and repeated patterns (like a causeway) in the second half, it just <i>sounds</i> difficult but it really isn't. Autechre fans will think it's a piece of cake.

Lightweight.

But I agree with Spaced, it's a piece of cake for someone who consumes Autechre at their most divisive. I think it's gorgeous, but I also kinda feel like maybe I am hyping it a bit much - it's not the second coming of Christ or anything.

It was definitely a "well that escalated quickly" moment in the context of the album. One of my 4-5 favorite tracks on first listen. You can put me in the camp that is completely desensitized to Autechre. For Jaquard Causeway it might be helpful to be desensitized to say Bitches Brew[i/]

It's certainly ok to get a general feel for the direction of the tracks played, but to say whether or not you like or dislike tracks based on a shitty recording is pretty lame. BOC tracks need a proper listen, on proper speakers/headphones, and as most of us know take several listens to digest. At least for a good share of their songs.

Cmon people you should know better.

I noted that the stream recording generally was distorting some of the sound - as a reference point, the kick on RFTD was a lot more 'blown-out' it seemed - and that song doesn't have a particularly heavy kick. Add the general microphone audio quality and it's a very rough preview.

So although I only listened to a fraction of Jacquard Causeway at the time (less than what has been saved from the event) perhaps no surprise that the mic wasn't going to handle it - the recording sounded like the beat equivalent of dropping a 10-ton bomb.

At least I should be suitably braced for the full album track... And with the rare exception, I've always taken toward the more kicking and electronic sounds. I'd rather listen to Chinook from Aquarius than Dayvan Cowboy - which I'm sure sounds mad to some people.

But from what I've heard, it sounds like this is seriously heavy -- I agree, maybe not for the casual listener or faint of heart.

I too agree that a deliberate listen to the full piece on great speakers or a nice pair of closed headphones seems to be the right choice when the moment arrives.

To some, but not all. I'm the same way. I like BoC's more "unique" tracks the darker ones make me think more.

only heard the first couple of minutes but it sounded like it was really building up to something, taking into account the track by track reviews, seems like it could be a kind of 747 type escalation into chaos.
hard to gauge by the short snippet i heard but both this and 'white cyclosa' made a whole lot of sense to me either side of 'reach for the dead'

This one's starting to grow on me

I like how the track just kinda chugs along at a slow steady beat. I can imagine just being stoned out of mind and watching the hands of a clock go round while rocking back and forth in the middle of a room. Slowly going insane... HELP ME!

I'm a huge Autechre fan so maybe that's why i LOVE Jacquard Causeway so much. its just such a different and crazy tune.
