i was under the impression that "magic window" was all the silences in "bitches brew" edited together. and even if it's not, i have no problem with keeping that rumour going.North by North wrote:This has always been my deep, well thoughtout theory too re: Magic Window.EnforcedNo wrote:i still say majik window was just to push the play time of the album to 66:00.06zeoevil wrote: Was Forest Moon inspired by Return of the Jedi?

Re: One very important question.
Probably 'Magic Window' is related to the term 'Magic eye'. The brothers used that name to describe the process by which a melody is distoted by a bad quality/old music equipment. The old Grundig machine they use modifies and saturates the sound, so it comes out distorted, thus it is as if a magic eye would make magic gnomes and colourful elfs rust the music with their malicious sorcery.EnforcedNo wrote:i still say majik window was just to push the play time of the album to 66:00.06zeoevil wrote:Was Forest Moon inspired by Return of the Jedi?wordizborn wrote:...questions...

Have you guys been working on any other Boards of Canada projects outside of the TH album in the last 7-8 years? Is it possible anything by Boards of Canada will be released in the next year or so?wordizborn wrote:hey guys. Also, taking into account the negative wave of the album, I would ask what they expect from the future, what they think the future is going to be like. They seem to be worried about the nature, I would ask if they are seriously concerned about nature and enviromentalism and in which way, what they do to take care of the environment (just recycling?). Also, to give some more info about their collective: Hexagon Sun. Besides, they used some Spanish words (Nuevas Semillas, Cosecha, Transmisiones, etc), why Spanish? Are they painting as well, as did some of the members of Hex Sun?
Important: their position and thoughts towards life.
I will probably come back tomorrow with a few more.
Your interview will be very interesting if you ask some of the questions the members are going to give you.
Thank you for taking this forum into account!

"What is a Nlogax?"
I understand the general belief that the term is a mathematical one, but the word Nlogax has always sounded like a Seuss character. Is there a double meaning there?
"What is the deal with Magic Window?"
I just want to clarify my intent. Is there anything else going on with Magic Window that we do not already know about? In other words, is there any audio frequency there or is it really just silence?

Where did this fascination with desert imagery come into play?
Did you know about the Skyline Theatre and the Coke sign when you chose the waterpark?
Did Deepwater Horizon or Fukushima influence the themes on Tomorrow's Harvest?
Peak oil?
Ocean acidification?
What about climate change and the increasing crop failures as a result of heatwaves and drought in recent years? Tomorrow's Harvest, with the cover depicting cracked pavement and an urban skyline, certainly seems to imply a lifeless Earth in the future.

I'm kind of curious to know if any of their beloved old gear finally shit the bed and if so, how has it affected their music making process.

It has been said by a member of Warp that the company took some pictures of the location for the video and sent them to the bros, and then they liked the place and accepted the proposal. So I guess that the desert idea is more related to Warp. I have always thought that BoC is more connected to green nature, Caledonia, Nessie and all that. And definitely more Europeist than Americanist and more humanists than scientists, but who knows.sleepysilverdoor wrote:Where did this fascination with desert imagery come into play?

i'm not sure but i think 'magic eye' may be the actual name of the little dial on their grundig reel to reel. never really made the connection with magic window though, i think it was mentioned in bocpages that there is a certain frequency thought to be connected with satan or such like. The Spaniard wrote:Probably 'Magic Window' is related to the term 'Magic eye'. well my explanation from a few posts back *could* be true. i remember reading it years ago, somewhere, and thinking that it was remarkable that what basically amounts to a conceptual art project could make it on to a (fairly) mainstream record. but then it occurred to me that maybe the miles davis "explanation" was just another instance of their aphex-style self-mythologizing (ie - lying.) you know like when mike or marcus (i can't remember which) submitted a "top ten best albums of the year" list to some publication, and nine of the ten artists/titles were fabrications (fredd-e i'm sure you know what i'm referring to.) or when they said "yeah we could release a dozen albums full of tracks like "roygbiv" tomorrow if we wanted to" (i'm paraphrasing but i know that's from an early interview. don't make me search for it.) basically what i'm saying is that they like fucking with people. so yeah either "magic window" is a very, very condensed "bitches brew" or it's just meditative silence with a beguiling title. we may never know.zeoevil wrote:"What is the deal with Magic Window?"
