someone told me to get a interconnecting cable that jacks in to my microphone plug on my computer and to the headphone plug on my vinyl player and it records. thing is, the sound sucks and its only ..1 channel. like it doesnt separate the particular sounds to the left and right speakers as it should in the songs. its just all together. i record the music using audacity.
do i have to get some sort of equiptment and software for the audio to transfer properly?

audacity will be fine for the job.
several issues....
you will need to record the audio signal after its been amplified as phono output is low level. i presume you play the vinyl through an amp so just use the tape output of that into the line in of your soundcard. i would suggest that this is a much better way than trying to record your phono output through the crappy mic preamp of your soundcard.
depending on your soundcard the line in is likely to be a 3.5mm jack plug so you will in all likliehood need a stereo 3.5mm jack to dual phono or else you will only get one half of the audio.
hope this helps, as long as you have it set up right even the worst souncard will be fine for this job.
also once you have the audio in audacity, there are a few tools for jobs like removing hiss and hum so you can tidy up the audio a bit before you export it as an mp3.
make sure that when you are monitoring the input into audicty you have a reasonable level else you should alter the input to your soundcard in the mixer. you can normalise the audio later (raise it to a certain level, usually done to just below 0db) but its preferable to get the audio in reasonably loud in the first place.

headphone jack should be fine if thats all you have to work with, is it a 1/4 inch or 3.5 mm jack plug ?
so you should connect that from your headphone out put to the line in on your souncard... depends what your soundcard is really but if its a just a cheap one it is likely colour coded (line in is blue i think) the important thing as far as it not recording both left and right channels is that you should check the cable is stereo.
just seen your next post, make sure when you plug into the input on your laptop it is not the mic input... this input will have a preamp and as your signal is already amplified from the vinyl this will result in a load of clipping and distortion.
the cable you have posted is stereo so theres no reason why you should only be getting one channel of audio....
i wonder if theres a setting in audacity... i'll download it and have a look.

ah, thats where i was plugging it in my computer (through the mic jack).. looking at my laptop..alls i see is the headphone jack.. is that the line in you were talking about? thanks a lot for your help btw! i really appreciate all this effort.
it's audacity thats causing it to be mono... the default project records as a mono file.
if you goto edit -> preferences -> audio I/O and under recording change the channels drop down from 1(mono) to 2(stereo).
you will now record both the left and right channels
just seen your next post and if all you have on the laptop is a mic in you will just have to work with that. i would set the recording level pretty low in your mixer and watch out on the level meter in audacity for clipping as the signal will be amplified both coming out of the vinyl player and going into the computer. as long as you are careful you should be alright though.

Use rca jacks out of your receiver. YOu can use headphone jacks to get to your pc but if you have rca jacks on your pc use those. Then record with a program like Goldwave, normalize the audio, and chop it into tracks. Then encode those tracks.
