I listened to R35 today for the first time in a long time and it really got me wondering why some of these tracks are so underrated... I think of all the old recordings it's probably the one least heard by fans, which is a shame really, it's a really good way of showing BoC's roots. I also love that it's not meant to be an album, more a collection of tracks, it sort of gives the tracks more room to be fun and almost carefree, you get the impression this is just a collection of things they were working on in their spare time.

My fave track off the 35 track tape.

When i decided to have a username 'audiotrack' i was so close to choosing 'audiotrack 11b'

It's good. Not my favorite off of the 35 track tape, but the flute sound at the beginning kills. It's also some surprisingly advanced production for the early 90's or whenever it was recorded.

Slightly off-topic, but is there any reason to believe that the stuff on the tape is not the music that was on the fabled early EPs? Or is it always just counted as its own thing?

Good track, but it couldn't hold 9b's jockstrap. Hands down, best song on that album.

There's always that possibility, and it has been suggested before - however, none of the tracks are the same as the 20 second samples that are kicking about of 'Wouldn't You Like To Be Free?', 'Duffy' & 'Circle' - but I've felt for a long time that these early releases are fictional - not necessarily that the music doesn't exist, but the physical cassettes, 12"s & CDs? I get the feeling something would have leaked by this stage. I mean, we have the 3 x cassette demos: A Few Old Tunes, Old Tunes Vol 2 and R35T, and none of these were mentioned on the original discography page. Don't get me wrong here, I'd love it if they did exist(Play By Numbers on CD, or a Hooper Bay 12"?

), and I'm hoping that they do eventually give us full versions of the songs mentioned above, but I'm skeptical on these early releases.

MDG did confirm in the past that the R35T tape was a compilation, the origin of which was unknown.

I have very few CDs and I no longer have any cassettes at all despite once having dozens, if not hundreds, and growing up in the era of copying cassettes from friends. If they exist and haven't been destroyed by the ravages of time, then they are sitting in dusty boxes in the attics of people in Canada and Scotland who couldn't be bothered to dig them out and rip them. We aren't talking about music lovers and other artists. We are talking about family or blokes who they met at school or in the pub not dedicated fans who would literally scream in joy if they found even a horrible third generation copy of even the shortest of the old albums.

I agree to an extent, but we have the three cassettes, and we also have confirmation of a 'Boc Maxima' cassette from one regular poster here who used to go out with someone close to BoC - on that cassette, he confirmed, is an early version of 'Kid For Today', from 1996! Sorry, but if that can even be confirmed to exist, and there's probably only one copy of that tape, then even some of the other releases in all probability, would have turned up somewhere. I'm not saying the music doesn't exist, just the physical releases on cassette or CD.

I'd still be willing to bet large amounts of cash that R35TT is mostly a collage of stuff from those old releases. I have a feeling if and when the boxset happens, people are going to recognize songs and be like "oh, THAT's such and such". Someone at least as of a few years ago had copies of SOMETHING from that era that still sounded good enough to make that tape happen. Hell, I've gone as far as putting 4 out of the 5 covers in a square (sans Catalog 3) and using it as the cover for R35TT in my collection.

R35TT is definitely my favorite of the 3, despite the numerous highlights on the other 2 tapes - it does make me almost feel that Old Tunes is the odds and sods of those early releases.

Maxima/Twoism is when they wanted to get signed, and the two "official" Old Tunes were both compiled in that same time frame, so it makes sense that those tapes would leak out too. I'd say in the actual timeline up to and including Hooper Bay, it was family and close friends all the way. Anyone who received those releases were close enough to the group to understand the value of not just tossing them in the garbage or selling them.

I think R35TT was a nice attempt by someone in the inner circle to get the highlights of those releases out to the public, and by not providing song titles and chopping some songs off at odd times, obfuscating the whole thing and still keeping those releases a mystery.

One interesting sidenote is that back in the MHTRTC era, Catalog 3 and Closes Vol 1 were not listed in the discography, just the other 3. Those 2 when they were added later also had a note saying they'd been reissued to CD in either 1997 or 1998, I can't remember now. That info might be in the wiki but I'm just recalling it from memory right now.

I'll second the love for 6A - just gorgeous, even better than 747. I wish BOC would have done more songs in this style. Fuck, everything on the R35TT is so good. All those little phantom vignettes floating by. On most days, I think I like it more than either of the Old Tunes tapes just in terms of pure consistency and intrigue. The fact that none of the songs have any official titles only makes them more fascinating and enjoyable.

I listen to r35 a lot. I never see good old 7a get any love. That's a cool song. I would love to hear more of their purely guitar based stuff.

Also 3a is the silliest song ever, it always makes me happy. 9b is king though. Also i'm working on a cover of 14b on mandolin, a plastic bucket and a recorder, because that's how I roll.
