Is Threads basically the UK version of the tv movie The Day After? (what happens after a nuclear war)

In theme, yes. I remember them as having quite a different feel to each other though. Threads was unremittingly grim whereas The Day After was a bit lighter (if a post-apocalyptic film can ever be considered "light").

Yes, although it is more of a docu-drama than a motion picture. It also displays a much bleaker aftermath, with martial law in effect (carried out by parking wardens of all people) and with the nuclear fallout and its effects on the land lasting for decades.

I got hold of 'threads' after reading that review, gonna watch it in a minute.

Threads is fantastic. Scared the crap out of me as a kid. Still sends shivers down my spine now...

The Day After looks like a Disney movie after Threads. Watched a little of Threads again last night and I still found it too disturbing in places.

For the record, it was shown on ITV, not BBC. A rare case of ITV drama scoring over the Beeb.

Seriously, do watch it, but be prepared to be properly disturbed by it.

watched it last night, that whole sequence with the futureless children learning from faded vhs tapes made me think of boc. i liked how there is no concession to mindless 'entertainment', it follows through with the premise to a harrowing extent, would be hard to find something like this these days.

I could have lived the rest of my American life without knowing Threads existed and have been perfectly happy. This thread (heh) piqued my curiosity, and now having watched it for the first time I can say without a doubt that everything is pointless and that the rest of my days will be plagued with nightmares of post-apocalyptic Sheffield.

the copy i watched had bbc logo, also wiki says:

"Threads was first broadcast on BBC Two on 23 September 1984.[5] It was repeated on BBC One on 1 August 1985 as part of a week of programmes marking the fortieth anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which also saw the first television screening of The War Game (which had been deemed too disturbing for television in the 20 years since it had been made). This repeat was also for the benefit of those who had 405-line TV sets at the time of the original transmission, which were incapable of receiving BBC-2. Threads was not shown again on British screens until the digital channel BBC Four broadcast it in October 2003."

from what I read, I don't think its ever been shown on itv.

Yeah it was a bit disturbing, i can't remember what lesson it was now.... history / humanities maybe? but yeah, i haven't ever watched it again since then, can only have been early teens when we saw it i think

Threads is the daddy, but don't forget the Raymond Briggs animation, 'When The Wind Blows' - nuclear war and the aftermath as experienced by an elderly couple in their home. Utterly bleak and sad.

I stand corrected. In my mind's eye it was ITV or Channel4. Just shows how time addles the memory.

YES!!!! I'd forgotten about this!! Her refusal to accept the situation was a brilliant piece of writing. Doesn't she mention still having stuff in the oven as he's trying to get her to shelter??? Again, my fading memories....

There's a weird part of me that's been toying with the idea of taking Tomorrow's Harvest and syncing it up with Threads...which I watched for the first time last night. Couldn't sleep very well and cuddled my wife extra hard.

I'm trying to figure out where to start though. In terms of the running length, the bombs would start going off at the beginning of nothing is real, while the sirens start blaring during Uritual. By the time Semena starts, people are sifting through rubble looking for whatever they can find...though that's half the movie.

On second thought, it doesn't really work.

I got around to watching Threads last night, damn it is a bleak film. I went to bed feeling depressed

All this TH stuff and appocalyptic / nihilistic type art has has really got me in the mood for indulging.

A game on the PS3 called 'the last of us'. Its set a decade or two after the collapse of society. I cant wait to play it, I hope the asthetics are just right.

Oh, and Threads is incredibly gloomy watching. Depressing enough to start with - Northern UK town, mundane working class life etc. After the bomb drops things just go down, d o w n, d o w n..... Don't hold out for a happy end - there isn't one
