Love that eerie, twangy gee-tar in there.
This song's like waking up in the middle of the night while something awful is happening, and trying to find out what's happening.
Like ... waking up and there's a light that's buzzing in and out in your hallway, and you're inexplicably very dizzy and balance is off ... in the background there are a number of sirens sounding, you're stumbling through the hallway towards this silhouette that comes in and out of your vision and you start passing out.
And that's the image that I get when I hear Uritual

see_bees()
Wow! I don't recall BoC using this trick before. Reliable trigger for see_bees() illusion.
Even saw "fire bees" dropping from the fireplace grill the other night (the base signal was embers dropping).

Having not found any meaning for the track title I wonder if it isn't a contraction of ur- and ritual? Ur-ritual. Meaning a proto-ritual.

J'aime faire des craquettes aux chiens!
I like this - primitive ritual.purgruv wrote:Having not found any meaning for the track title I wonder if it isn't a contraction of ur- and ritual? Ur-ritual. Meaning a proto-ritual.

Beats my Virtual/Uritual looking similar observation!

I took it to mean primitive ritual as well. This was after listening to tracks in reverse order from 17 down to 9. This makes Nothing is Real its predecessor and that track has a downfall of organized religion motif, meaning in a post apocalyptic scenario perhaps the next steps is a back to basics primordial ritual stage.
There's a lovely bit of correcting stereo balance when Nothing Is Real comes in on the right channel - feels quite soothing after the tense space-bee buzzing in the left channel.

The drone sound makes me think of an Aeroplane cruising at high altitude. From the first listen I pictured a B-52 Bomber in my mind. Maybe it was all cold war connotations of the number station codes from the promotional campaign? I don't know. I've probably listened to this more than any of the proper 'songs' on the album. Really stark, but incredibly atmospheric and powerful. Love it.
Re: see_bees()
I like this much better than the ur- prefix theory. Urit meaning they burn or he/she burns. So then it would be a portmanteau of burn and ritual! Some sort of burning ritual... How eerie and cryptic of them (totally characteristic).mondaysleeper wrote:http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/urit
What are they burning though? Incense? Bodies? Or maybe crops? Check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_destruction Totally falls in line with the album's view on the backwardness of our society.
Man, I love these sort of BoC track titles. A bit goofy but they get ya thinkin'. By the way, does anyone know what Oirectine ever meant?
Has anyone else noticed the two trailing notes that can be heard faintly for literally the first few milliseconds of the track? (You'll have to turn it up quite loud!)
It sounds as if the track was crossfading from a previous track. This fade isn't from 'Split Your Infinities' as that track fades to silence at the end and these notes are not heard.
It gives the feel that Uritual was cut from master that previously had a different track before it, interesting!

Could you post a volume boosted sample? I tried it, but couldn't hear it. Couldn't see anything in the waveform that would indicate that either.bR0bert wrote:Has anyone else noticed the two trailing notes that can be heard faintly for literally the first few milliseconds of the track? Great spot man! I noticed something very similar with Gemini and Reach For The Dead. While most of the tracks on TH seem to fade out Gemini stops rather abruptly, always giving me the feeling of RFTD not being the actual next track.bR0bert wrote:Has anyone else noticed the two trailing notes that can be heard faintly for literally the first few milliseconds of the track? I also made a heavily compressed version of the first 2~3 seconds of Uritual for anyone interested:

Thanks. I read wrong and was looking for it at the end of the track, heh. Still, I had to boost the volume by almost 45 decibels to hear it myself in Ableton! How on earth did you come to examine this at so ridiculously loud levels?Scyye wrote:I also made a heavily compressed version of the first 2~3 seconds of Uritual for anyone interested:

Absolutely! Seems like a nifty giveaway / indicator of where a 'scene' was cut late in the edit and didn't make it...bR0bert wrote:Has anyone else noticed the two trailing notes that can be heard faintly for literally the first few milliseconds of the track? (You'll have to turn it up quite loud!)

It's possible to hear it without additional amplification. As said, the volume does need to be on the loud side.
I reckon this is one of those little touches they were relying on people to pick up on!

yeh noticed that on a few tracks, that's one of reasons I still think (as much as this album is enough) there's still more to comeBetacord wrote:Absolutely!
