MDG, BOC and 'Homogenizing the user base'

Post by Mexicola »

Didn't the interview in the Guardian contain some quote from them about how the internet gives the illusion of freedom/empowerment, when in fact it's merely a way to homogenize society? I'm buggered if I can find that anywhere now???

Reason I ask it this quote from MDG almost 5 years ago...

MDG: Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:31 am - (in reply to my message incidentally 8))

"This message is absolutely right. The guys' 'radio silence' is simply because they're busy. They're not retiring anytime soon. If it gives you guys any kind of useful insight, Mike and Marcus hate doing promotional work, and they see things like MySpace as counter-productive homogenizing communities. But the page was set up by a fan and was already mis-representing the band, so they requested that it was taken over so they could at least know that it wouldn't start filling up with shit. They would have shut it down, but were persuaded by Warp to keep the community going."

EDIT - Found!!

Mike Sandison: "I absolutely agree with that. Modern technology often gives an illusion of empowerment while in reality it's increasingly all about removal of liberty, and homogenising the user base."

Second to last answer, by Sandison.

Uncanny similarity in choice of words by the way. I still wonder if MDG is Sandison.

Yeah, it's been a long standing suspision of mine that the Hexagon Sun reps on here like MDG are the the Sandisons being active in the community without having to deal with fans.

Jesus - I swear I'm losing the plot. How can I remember a quote from MDG from 5 years ago and NOT spot that quote after re-reading the article 10 times tonight, frantically trying to spot it!!

Going for a lie down...

common enough phraseology though, i would think their little collective would have similar world views and similar ways of expressing them.

Yes - it does seem the most fitting way to describe, so I see nothing uncanny about it. Not quite the same as an entire sentence repeated verbatim.

They're right, Internet communities are homogenized. For example, you're all uniformly creepy stalkers.

I reckon anyone who believes neither one of the BOC boys has ever contributed to this forum needs to rethink:
Firstly, they are artists, as am I, and no matter what we might say we all want recognition for our work.
Secondly, they are Boards Of Canada, as I am not, and one of the basic facts about them we can all agree on is that they like to see us scrambling around for secret codes, subtle patterns, and hidden messages - if you were one of them would you be able to resist dropping the odd red-herring into a thread??
Thirdly, it's exactly what I would do.
And Fourthly (is that a word?!), this is Twoism after all

As this is your 1st post shall I assume you to be just an aspiring creepy stalker?
