Absolutely agree on the worst of 'what if's'. Although the title Split your Infinities, as in one of infinite possible outcomes (infinite universe idea, aka Many Worlds Interpretation), works well for pretty much the whole theme of the album, it fits particularly well for this nugget.

So, here is another stab in the dark...
When I first saw the title I was struck with how familliar it was, but couldn't quite place why. Then it hit me. When I was much younger (early 70s or so) my brother and I would watch Star Trek whenever it was on. When the intro would play, if my mother was anywhere near the TV she would cry "split infinitive!" when Kirk said "to boldly go where no man has gone before". It was mad annoying at the time, but it certainly stuck in my head.
Sooo, what if the song really refers to space exploration after a cataclysmic event? It does come after Palace Posy (apocalypse) after all. The narrative falls apart if the alternate order of the songs is utilized (at least I think, I'm sure I'm missing something) and the excellent sleuthing of this board in finding the debunked FEMA vid doesn't fit this theory readily. Although now that I think about it, perhaps it is not space exploration at all, but instead a penal colony in space. Again, just grasping at the straws here, but perhaps this has something to do with it.

So you mean you weren't implying that the BoC track title alluded to space exploration based on the fact that Star Trek's opening sequence used a split infinitive, as highlighted by your mother?

Tenuous, but highly possible.

Anyone else notice that BoC did claps right in this album instead of how they used them on TCH? It adds a sort of ghostly human sound to the bleak soundscape.

There is also a movie called Split Infinity. I haven't seen it but from some brief research it appears to be about the importance of family values. From a user review on the IMDb Page:

it talks about many of the problems we have today with our families - discontent, disunity, greed etc.

This would seem to fit in with the album's theme of "collapse".

Eh. BOC always seemed to be much more fascinated by the idea of conspiracy theories, rather than with the conspiracies themselves. Perhaps this song is hinting that some people, instead of looking at the actual problems around us, would rather invent fictitious problems to distract people? Just guessing...
