Have quite a few friends who'd never heard of BoC beyond me wittering away at them over the last few years. TH has really flagged their attention and they've been buying the album. I know it's a total random sample, but I'm sure there's a nugget of truth in that as a general representation backed up by the chart positions we're seeing.

22nd place in the French iTunes charts, just above F'n'F 6 soundtrack and Discovery, RAM at No2…

Boc does have a huge global following. There's no language barrier to their music.

Also, the video for Reach for the Dead on youtube has 930,000+ views so far and it hasn't even been up for a month.

My faith in humanity has been restored.

The odd thing is over the last few years there didn't seem to be a huge chunk of people discovering BoC for the first time, but I guess they must have done. That or the marketing was SO good and its just the way the internet makes it easier to listen to and buy music over 2005. Bit of both maybe.

No way - of all albums, and straight in at #3! Unbelievable :shock:

Honestly thought it would be lower half of Top 20 at best... Somehow it's made the Top 3 - which is amazing, yet sort of surreal!

i wonder how many units they have to sell to get number 1, probably not what it used to be.

One major thing that's happened since the last album was the advent of services like Pandora and Last.fm which allow users to discover music based on a particular genre or feel. I'm guessing that BOC amassed a large new following in between albums through these services, discovered by those listening to stations based on much more accessible artists (Bonobo, Flying Lotus, etc), in turn exposing them to BOC. Not only have I seen friends become fans of the band in this manner, but have on multiple occasions walked into people's homes, greeted by a BOC tune, and after inquiring about it realizing they had no idea what they were listening to. The cat is out of the bag, and what was once inaccessible to most is now quite the opposite.

Definitely agreed on the marketing as well. It was absolutely brilliant and I'm sure far exceeded the expectations of whoever came up with it in the first place. I'm sure it will set the tone for the industry moving forward.

I found it strange to see Tomorow's Harvest being promoted on the front page of iTunes. Crazy. It's just weird seeing a BoC release with so much promotion. No other release of theirs had this much promotion. I wonder how many new fans they've gained.

Well it's evidently selling a lot more than I would have ever expected.

I wonder how many units would be considered a "hit" for Warp / BoC. I'm guessing it's blown well past that number already.

They've really outdone themselves this time. Congrats, Mike, Mark, Warp, et all.

I don't think it's all marketing though. When I was listening outdoors with some friends last night a couple kids came up and inquired about what we were listening to. Come to Dust floored them!

Oh yeah, I dont mean to imply it's just marketing, IMHO it's one of, if not the best album they've done. Fair point on things like Last.fm and Pandora making it easier to discover them over the last few years too.
