BoC songs that aren't in 4/4?

Post by Jonse »

You know, I've been thinking about it a lot and I realized that the vast majority of BoC's songs are in 4/4...even those without percussion.

Are there more than a couple tracks that aren't in 4/4 in their discog? I'm sure there has to be. Nothing is coming to mind except for Sunshine Recorder and I vaguely recall something on the new album being in a different time signature but I'm not sure what.

Off the top of my head, I remember Jacquard Causeway being in 3/4 and Transmisiones Ferox in 5/8.

Even the ones without percussion? I'm not sure I hear anything that makes Corsair, I Saw Drones, The Color of The Fire, Sundown, etc. in 4/4. These are more non-pulse than odd time.

Kaini Industries though is an example of a track w/o percussion that's still (mostly) in 4/4.

Nothing is coming to mind that's in an obvious non-4/4 time. However, it's worth noting that their are a couple examples where they use 5 bar long phrases of 4/4 (typically phrases are in powers of 2 bars). Examples are Sunshine Recorder and IABPOITC.

And also, what the fuck is Smokes Quantity? I'm not sure what to call it. It sounds 4/4 but the chord progression is off from the beat.

Kaini Industries, sure.

Well obviously I mean the ones that are not in free time. Those ones are not applicable to time signatures anyways.

I'm more talking about Olson, Kaini, Open The Light, etc.

But I'm trying to think of a full on non 4/4 track (from their previous discog, not just JC as was stated above) and honestly I can't count one hand of fingers of them yet.

This is still 4/4, but the chord progression in Peacock Tail is 7 bars long, which is kinda unusual.
You're gonna carry that weight.

FUCK I got it. Tears From The Compound Eye is definitely not in 4/4...or at least it changes from one bar to another.

Was coming in to say this. Most of their stuff is 4/4 timing but a LOT of their chord progressions are either 6 or 5 bars long.

Indeed. I think the most accurate way to notate it would be alternating bars 2/2 and 3/2, or maybe simple 5/2.

Also, Diving Station is in 3/4.

I'm pretty sure it alternates because that last bar doesn't go all the way 4/4.

how are you counting it? i'm counting 4/4 maybe at around 100 beats per minute.

FernieCanto,

do you think that in Tears From The Compound Eye it would be easier to feel the second part (around 2:00) in 2/2 and then at end of each phrase one bar of 2/4?

EDIT: i see you said 5/2 as well... I guess that simplifies everything for the main section. and you can of course count the entire song like that. although i'm still thinking the bridge should be split up (again, thinking of it being notated) cause the bar of rest makes it really convenient to do that.

EDIT 2:

first section: 12 bars of 5/2

section section or whatever you'd like to call it: 4 bars of 2/2 and 1 bar of 2/4 and that 5 bar phrase happens around 9/10 times before it fades into the ether.

Marcus probably played Farewell Fire not caring about time though

A lot of their beatless music could be argued to be in free time and have no time signature. Stuff like Corsair, Into The Rainbow Vein, etc.

Sunshine Recorder sounds like it's in 6/4. Really I hear it as 4/4 + 2/4 every measure.

Jacquard Causeway in in 3/4.

Magic Teens is kind of weird and uses polyrhythm. The beginning sounds in 6/4. Then the synth arpeggio it ends with sounds like it's in 7/8. Then there's this chromatic bass synth melody at the very end in 4/4.

I think you could argue Tears From The Compound Eye is in 10/4 or 5/2. With beat emphasis like whole note, dotted whole note.

Yeah it was weird hearing them speak. Wasn't expecting that when I first heard that.

And I was saying Kaini Industries IS in 4/4. Maybe I said it in an ambiguous way. But I think there is a bar of just 2 in there.
