That's 4/4, just with swing timing.

Tears From The Compound Eye... this is where not having a beat makes it harder to tell. If you count slowly in 4/4, so the 1-2-3-4 is split over 2 chords, then yeah, you have either a 2/4 bit before it repeats, or a 6/4 depending on how you want to look at it.

But if you count fast so you can get in a 1-2-3-4 over one chord then it's 4/4 all the way, just 5 counts of it like someone said. And honestly, so much of their stuff is 5 or 6 counts of 4/4 it's more likely that I'd say.

Jaquard Causeway is so jacked it's hard to say what it really is, but the loud, literal drum beat is like a 3/4. But the rest of the instrumentation is running at 4/4 underneath it. You could argue that's a polyrhyhtm thing or they're just being clever ;)

I don't see how counting TFTCE fast would be proper though...I mean the melody is rather slow.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Yeah, I agree. Deciding on time signatures is more than just counting, but also about feeling the mood and the feel of the piece. That song is a mellow andante, and counting 5 bars of 4/4 would turn it into a presto.

Not sure if Zoetrope even has an easily definable signature, but it sure doesn't sound like 4/4 to me. Actually it seems to be in 7/8 or something...

Also, XYX is in 4/4 ;)

true about Tears From The Compound Eye... if you were writing it out though for whatever reason i think it be better to give each beat the value of a half note and write it in cut time or else the notation would look really confusing.

and Jacquard Causeway is truly confusing. there's a lot going on there... they were definitely tricksy with that one.

The reversed synth melody in A is to B as B is to C is in 9/8.

No one's mentioned The Beach at Redpoint yet, which is in 10/4 time.

Indeed, but isn't it 20/4 though?

You might be right. Whenever I've counted it I get to twenty before repeating, I think I assumed that was simplified as 10/4 in my mind but of course it doesn't work like that.

The whole musical phrase doesn't have to be in one bar. I'd say 10/4 makes more sense or just alternating bars of 4/4 and 6/4.

Smokes Quantity's drum track is 4/4 but the chords do have oddly timed changes.

Wish I had something else to contribute, but they do stay pretty much in the 4/4 realm most of the time.

Oh yeah, M9 sounds like 6/8 time. Am I right?

I've been working out how exactly the beat is worked out in that one. Given that the synth lines are heavily swung (and have a triplet rhythmic backbone as a result), that massive chugging 3/4-esque backbeat fits really well. The only rhythmic element that doesn't fit the typical swung pattern is that chugging click between the kick and the snare each measure...which fills the middle of the swung synth lines. When the hi-hats come in later in the song, they're either right before or after the downbeats but never actually on them.

Personally I think it's the most brilliant beat they've done since Sunshine Recorder...because I really like it when they get creative in the rhythm department.[/url]
