Meanwhile, my cousin donated some footage he recorded around 1997 to me and I created this out of it: . Colors are not edited by me! This is the result of recording it in longplay mode on video8 using a camera from that era and transferring it to VHS and back. Pure analogue beauty

Almost, but not quite OT - I've just put together a retro video-ident to put up as an intro to the Phenoplastic website. This is my first attempt at computer animation.

Looking forward to seeing what's on these tapes my parents dropped off yesterday. My Mom told me she was cleaning out the entertainment unit and asked if I wanted anything. I requested all the old VHS tapes - though I feel a bit bad, she had already thrown them out and had to grab them from the garbage.

This documentary about the impact of videocassettes looks very interesting too!

I have several of those Fuji "HQ T120" tapes... got them from my grandmother, who (several months ago) gave me 44 tapes worth of miscellanous things she had recorded off cable TV in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I recorded over some of them, but a significant number remain untouched. I think I should probably go through them and label each with its contents - that footage could turn into something useful.

I recently misappropriated and subverted the meaning of an old anti-drugs video.

Mainly as I was teaching myself how to edit and thought it would be a good exercise.

So I made an attempt at uploading the video (35min51sec) to YouTube and it was rejected due to its length. I'll have to come up with an alternative method of distribution. Would torrent be too cumbersome?

In the meantime, here are some recent odds and ends:

Remember this, my first eBay purchase? Well, when it arrived it turned out to come with neither a functional battery nor charger. Until I could get some power source, it was essentially useless to me. I kept it, though, because I was sure that I'd eventually figure something out.

Fast-forward to, oh, maybe six months ago; I purchased another VHS camcorder, this model from 1987, at a local thrift store for $30. It came with a (dead) battery and charger; replacement batteries for that model are readily available online.

I have not yet scrounged together the cash to purchase a replacement battery for either camcorder, but I just noticed tonight that the input for the charger-cord on both cameras is identical - the charger is interchangeable, meaning I can use the charger from the 1987 model to power the eBay one!

Plugged it in and it works well. I recorded a weird little jazz/improv tune with it which I'll share as soon as I can get it digitized properly.

It's nice to know that stuff one buys was money well spent... better late than never!

In protest of PRISM and the NSA spying thing, I have deleted all but one of my Google accounts; that last account will be gone in a few weeks once I can get some crucial stuff backed up. The YouTube videos I posted in this thread are now all down, but I will be reposting the content on the much more privacy-aware gobblin.se and replacing the links soon.

Pianoforte, didn't you at some point have trouble using your video capture card/device in Linux? Here's a tip, that didn't work for me but might work for you. In Linux, install VirtualBox (virtualization software like VMWare), install Windows in it and in the settings of VirtualBox enable throughput of USB devices (if your capture device is USB, otherwise it won't work). You may have to install an add-on for VirtualBox to enable USB 2.0, Google around a bit. Be sure to unload modules from the kernel that may have been loaded automatically when you plugged in your USB device. Then, inside the virtual Windows, you should be able to capture your video like you usually do. It didn't work flawlessly for me because there was lots of flickering in the image, I suspect this is a latency or USB bus bandwidth problem, causing the video capture software and the USB device not to sync correctly, but it's worth a try. VMWare might be better but I didn't try that.

thanks for the thoughts, Guido. I'll be getting a Mac soon and using that to capture video, so it's not so much of a concern for me now, but I appreciate the tip and will keep it in mind.

I think I may have mentioned that I managed to find an S-VHS-C camcorder a while back. I've since been playing with it a bit, and I've discovered that even S-VHS-C is a more lo-fi format than Hi8 (:D). Until I can get a fully analog VHS-C camcorder, I've been experimenting with the EP/LP mode on the S-VHS-C model. It looks a lot like VHS - same sort of artifacts and weirdnesses - and the effect is furthered when transferred to EP VHS from the master VHS-C tape. If I can find a fully analog VHS-C camcorder, I intend to ditch Hi8 altogether - VHS-C looks much more like what I'm looking for in terms of deterioration of the video signal.
