Most Unique/Weird Music you've heard?

call me desensitized, but there's no such thing as "weird" music to me any more.

There's different music, sure, but it's been a long time since something's weirded me out, musically.

I more or less just get really excited when I come across something "different".

I concur with this. It feels just "wrong" to call any music "weird".

I'm also in the same position, the main reason i started this thread was to find stuff that i'd actually consider unique or "weird" because i'm becoming de-sensitized as well.

Since nobody mentioned Captain Beefheart, I feel it's my duty to mention Trout Mask Replica. A brilliant, classic record. Love it or hate it, it's a mandatory listen.

If you haven't already, check out Deerhoof. Definitely on some other shit structurally, but overall some really fun rock & roll made by very talented musicians. Oh, and they have a japanese female lead singer (who also plays bass) with a high pitched voice and very heavy accent.

Friend Opportunity is my favorite album by them, but every album is very good. Here's the lead track from that record:

Some of Beefheart's stuff certainly is a tad "out there". I must way I enjoy for an example Safe As Milk more though

. I guess most outsider music should be mentioned too though.

I think that if you feel "desensitized" you could just move out from modern rock/electronic/whatever avantgarde genres related to popular music, and explore classical music, tribal music (I mean real tribal music, e.g. compilations compiled by ethnologists), or antique music in general, from most grotesque barocque compositions, to Greek sheets and so on. There's lot of unexplored weirdness outside the boundaries of this contemporary First World music we're used to!

I totally agree to this!

I also like (some, not all) tribal music. Of the 'for anthropologists only' variety rather than the puto mayo variety (not that there's something inherently wrong with the latter, but it tends - probably even intends - to be a pleasant listening experience for the wannabe cosmopolitan westerner). I am not at all an expert in this field, but I am the happy owner of several great pieces of music from outside of, to bottow Shortwave's expression, the First World. I could give a few titles, but only if required because it involves me getting up

Furthermore I also enjoy medieval music. Atrium Musicae de Madrid's Tarantella album is my first in this genre and I still enjoy it. Furthermore I really like Clemencic Consort. Other names that come to mind are Ensemble Perceval, the Early Music Consort of London and Voces Thules.

Classical is great too, especially pieces like Debussy's Prélude a l'apres-midi d'un Faune and Strawinksy's Le Sacre du Printemps.

I agree with TTK. I haven't heard "weird" music since I first heard gantz graff when I was 13. When you wrap you head around a thing like that at that age its quite easy wrapping your head around other even weirder music when your older....

I can't for the love of god think of anything weird musically, except maybe some things I made myself (like youwitdabangelwitstro), but thats only weird in my ears because I'm remember the time and place it was made in (read: tripping balls).

For me, the thing about Jandek isn't the music, but as you say, the intrigue.
A bloke releases 40-odd albums of essentially unlistenable music over 25 or so years to practically zero audience, no attempt at publicity, the only clue to who he is being a post office box....it's a great story isn't it? It fascinates me on all sorts of levels - his dedication, motivation, I love his aesthetic, the album covers.... I guess it's all worked in some strange way as he's now a cult hero of sorts.
