Tomorrow's Harvest: The Bigger Picture
Hello.
Casual lurker newbie here. Thanks for having me.
From what I've seen so far, there's a lot of detailed analysis going down, but not as much talk about the 'bigger picture' / overall concept stuff of TH.
I really feel Transmissiones Ferox is a key track. When the womans voice came in during early listens I really felt like there was a message trying to be communicated through the backdrop of a disaster situation. The last time I felt something like that was when Thom Yorke was telling me: 'If you think this is everything, you're wrong' during 'Separator'.
Initially I thought the voice was saying "1999", but now I'm certain it's "1995".
With that in mind, a quick search for disasters that occured in 1995 returned only one terrorist attack in the U.S. (I'm from Scotland too, but you know the U.S. is really under the spotlight of the world)
Anyway, you might want to have a look at this. Give particular attention to the section 'Motivation' and note which group were involved:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing
Could be coincidence (though I'm doubtful) and sense this is the underlying theme of the album: Religion vs. Politics coming to a head. Thoughts anyone?
Very sorry if this is not new information or you don't agree with the creation of a new thread for this!

prety sure that was a conspiracy coverup but this is opening a can of worms
and i think 1 possible reference of a single DATE in 1 track is drawing prety small picture conclusions i think the bigger picture is the nature of human apocalypses spiritual and physical and outer and inner and the cycles we go thru as human beings in the same way everything in the world does . and theres mutliple interpretations depending on ur perspective and ur life experience . which all realmic and truly great art is able 2 tap into and boc knows it.

If you are analysing this as 'Religion vs. Politics' (bit of a tangent here, but being religious can in itself make someone political) I would say so in full knowledge that this album is likely to cover a broad range of topics and that it may have several overarching themes. I'm not saying I disagree, just that I would hesitate to say that this album is about any singular thing.
For example, Geogaddi couldn't have just been boiled down to brainwashing and an obsession with the devil. It was much more than that.

i never boldly say that an album is about this or that ... usually there are too many directions. but this is one case - maybe the first case for me - where i feel there is a succinct message. it is that of collapse, and i'm not breaking any new ground here. based on what we have read in the last couple of weeks, plus what we collectively seem to be taking away from this, and other conjecture/ speculation ... its pretty much pointing at this one thing. well, at least the theme - packaged inside an 80's sci-fi/ thriller codec if you will.
however, this insidious event is not quite like everything else. yes, everything has a cycle, but this is more like a big mirror getting set down in front of humanity and saying ... "guess what we pulled off in less than a couple of centuries? we royally fucked it all up and since we don't seem to be taking the proactive angle (and no folks ... recycling those plastic bottles - which we shouldn't be using in the first place - ain't the answer), we are still gonna have to take our medicine."
and i love it. as an old guy (i was born in 1971) with a kid on the way, this means more to me now than anything. sure i am living in the past more than ever and miss it, but mostly because looking forward is a scary thought, whereas looking back is nothing but fun (hence the significance of MHTRTC). i worry about the future and unless we commit to substantive change - make some REAL sacrifices ... we will crush ourselves under the weight of our nonsensical growth model.
just kidding - truth is, there's a cryptic hidden recipe for a divine split-pea soup among the tracks.

i am responsible for this. ok guys, lets get a hold of ourselves ... back to the original point, i was discussing my support for the theme of the album being ... 'A-pea-calypse' - that was too easy. ok thats enough.
regarding religion or politics i would say this is probably even bigger than that. i'm going straight for apathy and greed. to not shift course despite having a feeling we are headed the wrong way - or - to continue our path for the benefit of a few/ to the detriment of the majority ... kind of sums us up right now and its very human.
kinda why i will probably fix my rotten deck only once i have fallen through it. for now, i would rather spend the time listening to Tomorrows Harvest. oh the irony. an odd lot, we humans.

Very well said that man, and I'm older! - 5 years older, with three children. You have eloquently summed up my own feelings about the whole TH experience. I think this album is pretty important, and not just musicallypaul wrote:i never boldly say that an album is about this or that ... usually there are too many directions. but this is one case - maybe the first case for me - where i feel there is a succinct message. it is that of collapse, and i'm not breaking any new ground here. based on what we have read in the last couple of weeks, plus what we collectively seem to be taking away from this, and other conjecture/ speculation ... its pretty much pointing at this one thing. well, at least the theme - packaged inside an 80's sci-fi/ thriller codec if you will.

appreciate that mate. i agree - it really is an important album. if for nothing else, it has guys like us from all walks of life who appreciate this band, reaching past that to address such a potent topic as this.
to think - all fun and the hidden secrets aside - using an album as a vector to shape such discussion ... yeah these guys have really done something special here.

Agreed. Apologies for the poor wording in the initial post. I intended to say that Religion vs Politics could be one of the underlying themes here. A potential root cause that would/will lead to:Aerial Boundaries wrote: I would hesitate to say that this album is about any singular thing.
Which is a definite yes. And for the reasons you described. But further to this, I think there's more 'story' after this as something transcendant happens around Split your infinities... and beyond. Something like the trippy experience towards the end of 2001:a space odyssey.paul wrote: collapse
This is true. But I'm more intrigued spcifically by what BoC had in mind when they put this together, or what story they intented it to tell. It's not unheard of them to be specific - as is evidenced by IABPOITC ep. Similarly, I think there is importance in how consistent, coherent and tight TH is as an album.MAXIMUS MISCHIEF wrote: theres mutliple interpretations depending on ur perspective and ur life experience

i feel that way too and i think i eluded 2 it a little bit in my post but thye have clearly said that they want ppl to find the narrative themselves. they MEAN something but i dont think that means they mean only ONE thing . . with tomorrows harvest it can be looked at in multiple ways. but i really dont think its anything close to being about the oklahoma bombing no ofense lolSciFire wrote:Agreed. but also if thats what u get out of it then thats totaly legit and i think if u said thats what it meant and u really felt it and that was ur interpretation then i dont think boc would disagree with u. i think personally i get a LOT stronger spirit vibes from this album than even boc does. i think the deepest realms of art allow for truths that even the artist themselves dont see in the creation . and thats the beauty of sharing it with ur fellow ppl.
It's interesting to speculate as to where BOC go next. The message in this album is pretty clear compared to their previous efforts and forces me at least to stop and reconsider what they might've been saying all along. In a way they have nailed their political colours to the mast now, so it will be difficult for them to follow up this record with something light or flippant......even if it does take years!
...what subtlety?
its a good point mc10101, i kinda was wondering this myself - where next? while its said there are no new ideas, we now have TH and its pretty mind-blowing stuff. i surmise we will be surprised again whatever it is. to have some fun, a follow-up in the logical progression of things would be a futuristic album - a-la the 2001 trip-out scene:
but the whole album would perhaps be one long track morphing from one trippy bit to another much like Kubrick's unforgettable/indiscernible scene. that would be a dandy follow-up, but it is a little out there. plus i don't know if they'll have analog instruments in space.SciFire wrote: But further to this, I think there's more 'story' after this as something transcendant happens around Split your infinities... and beyond.
