Rank BoC albums in order

Post by Jonse »

So, I've been doing a lot of thinking and I'd probably put them like this:

Geogaddi > Hi Scores > Music Has The Right to Children > In a Beautiful Place Out In The Country > Twoism > The Campfire Headphase > Trans Canada Highway

Tomorrow's Harvest not counted as I don't consider that rubbish to be a Boards of Canada album.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

....wait what's wrong with TH? It's a perfectly good album, if not one of their best.

Almost everything. It doesn't sound good, there's only about three tracks up to BoC standards, the rest sound like BoC-alike music. Used too many synths and too little samplers. Melodies and beats just don't stand out too much. Jacquard Causeway is a complete wreck and undoubtedly the band's worst song, the production is off especially pertaining to the width, that "video nasty" effect ruins several tracks that otherwise could have some texture, overall lack of texture, overall lack of layers, cold and sterile as opposed to the warm sound of their previous records - not inherently bad but this sound is not really used in an interesting way. Doesn't flow too well, no segues that I can recall, really only one stand out track on the album (New Seeds) that feels like a BoC track and flows like a BoC track.

Keep in mind though, this is just my opinion. I respect the opinion of anyone who liked the album, but it's not my kind of BoC. I'm really surprised so many of you love it or consider it to be one of their best.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

lol, New Seeds, with its heavy krautrock influence, was almost a total departure. On my first listen, I was like WTF?!? (in a good way) this sounds nothing like Boards of Canada!

Then why didn't you vent your spleen in the TH discussion thread: http://www.twoism.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10516

Or rather, post your BoC albums in order of preference (minus TH) in the several 'rank BoC's albums' threads, which I'm sure have been posted in the last 8 years. :?

1.Geogaddi
2.IABPOITC
3.Twoism
4.MHTRTC
5.Hi Scores
6.TCH
7.TCHEP
8.TH (I know they wanted that soundtrack feel, but as great as the songs are, it just doesn't feel like an album to me... More of a quickly slammed together soundtrack of tracks cut too short)

Fuck's sake, the OP posted almost the exact same thread last month: http://www.twoism.org/forum/viewtopic.p ... light=rank

Rodheh wrote:Where would you guys rank this album in BoC's discog?

For me, I'm still going with:

Geogaddi > Music Has The Right To Children > Tomorrow's Harvest > The Campfire Headphase
So in little over a month, TH has gone from #3 BoC album to NOT being a BoC album at all. Hmmkay.

I mean as long as you acknowledge that it's your opinion but like...

Have you listened to it on good headphones? I can almost guarantee there's a fuck ton of texture on this album, probably moreso than TCHP and close to Geogaddi. There's so much detail in each song. And the production is incredibly crisp and the low end awesome. And the percussion/beats on the songs are pretty complex. There's also plenty of samples in there, I think most of the synth sounding stuff is samples (not the arpeggios though) and most of the drums and beats are samples of them playing all sorts of percussion and according to interviews most of the instrumentation is samples of the brothers playing all sorts of various instruments.

Yes, I have. There's way less detail than any of the others IMO.

The arps are mainly my problem. Not the one in Gemini but all the others.

Why would I not be serious? I hate JC. Sloppy ass beat with uninteresting samples and a bitcrusher. Melody just layers in a really unorganized fashion and it sounds like something they did in one take just adding layer after layer of the same thing. It reminds me of something Flying Lotus would make.

What I meant with New Seeds is that it's BoC QUALITY, it's a really damn good track actually. No cheesy synths, bittersweet melody, cool atmosphere and samplers.

Yeah. Now that I've listed to it more I'd say it definitely ranks lowest. As for the new thread, this one's more about all of their albums as a whole, not just TH.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Again, that thread was focused around Tomorrow's Harvest, this is not.

My translation of OP: So I've been doing a lot of thinking and I would probably put it like this:
I really feel like slagging off the new album but everyone seems so besotted with it that they're not listening to me. The only thing to do is start a new thread, no matter how tenuous or misleading the title, which will enable me to say something highly provocative such as 'Tomorrow's Harvest not counted as I don't consider that rubbish to be a Boards Of Canada album' and not be ignored

Oh please... :x
Am now boycotting this thread on grounds of utter misrepresentation
...what subtlety?

Nope, I just really wanted to have this discussion. Not my fault everyone has a problem with an opinion.

I swear to god - wasn't trying to be provocative. I guess I'm relatively alone with this opinion on TH.

Honestly if people have a problem with this thread for whatever reason, we don't need to have it. I don't have the ability to delete it though now that there are posts.

The golden rule is to think twice before criticizing anything on a fan forum. And if you do, better take cover. It really sets the fire off for some people when you write negatively of something they deem objectively superior.

Sure does. :P My personal stance is to discuss things in friendly spirit and leave the drama to the tv. I think it gives more room to express different opinions.

^that is just trite to take out the "expressing one's own opinion etc..." that goes without being said. the problem with rodeh should be obvious: homie made the same thread twice and is under the impression that he didn't.

although it blows my mind that even after you did a lot of thinking about this the new album isn't placed last on your list, but instead, not included?

this thread is WACK and not because of your aforementioned opinions but because you actually felt the need to make a topic on listing their albums in hierarchical order.
