the boards as of late

Post by hills west »

now i have a request...
i need everyone here to maintain some sort of self control toward each other...this kind of behaviour is not very adultlike..im sure if the guys are reading these topics it must make them feel very weary about releasing material to people who use the information against one another as some sort of "cool token"...theres no reason anyone should have enough time to obsess and psych-out about an artists whereabouts and such...when i came to this board it was very calm and collected...it was very secret like boc...boc are exploding in the world and as much as i DO NOT like it it is the fact...lets maintain a deep respect for the images the music gives us and not lead onto a bunch of britney spear like fans ok?
please?
i really hope that boc do not release a boxset...my imagination will conjure up better melodies than the disappointing ones ive allready heard being re-released and im sure that most of you feel very passionate towards this concept...what i mean is we've possibly downloaded all of the material that might be on a boxset...and to hear that released will kill the idea that something we've never heard before is still out there...and of course there is...
let this question mark of melodies be your inspiration to make great music on your own..as it will be mine...
what boc release to there friends and families should stay that way....i forbid the release of secret material by them...i love the idea of not knowing what it was too much for it to be destroyed by some release that will put it in the hands of new listeners who know nothing of the true history of boc...and by that i mean the listeners who knew of boc since the beginning..
i love all of you, but this activity is driving me into secrecy....i may not release anything outside of my life again as a result...
thank you
continuing to drink now

Yeah, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. *Office Space* They've already said the box set is in the works. So it will happen, it's just a matter of time. If they decide to release Old Tunes stuff, would'nt you like to hear it on good quality cd or vinyl? We already have this stuff, so what's the point of Boc keeping it? Now the rest of the back cat is a different story. I have a feeling we may never hear these. I do agree with you that it might spoil our expectations, but say they do decide to release everything we know about, there will still be hundreds of tracks that we don't. Food for thought...

Hills; Re-read your post tomorrow when your sober and see if you still feel the same way.

I couldnt agree with you more, man.
Im suprised that BoC even put this idea of a "box set" out there in the first place after explaining how personal these songs were to them.

I guess there is no point in holding the old tunes stuff back, but I just feel bad for them that they have to give it up completely.

Ive heard the songs, im ready for a new era with new tunes, even if i have to wait till 08.
Save the box sets for when boc is no more.

After a promotional video, myspace ads, and this stuff im just kind of bummed.

I just feel like we are pushing BoC.
We will see what happens.
idk idk

no one here is "pushing boc." If indeed anyone is, it is warp or the brothers themselves. As far as the "promotional videos" and radio-friendly format of their most recent ep, I assume both were choices made directly by BoC (as, apparently, were the tshirts). I say it's too soon to call them sellouts, but if anyone has shattered the feeling of an insular, private BoC world, it is Mike and Marcus. And deliberately, it would seem...

The music still mostly sounds good to me, but the way they are marketed right now, let's face it, is typical, bland, and commercial. Even if musically they are trying some interesting things, visually it seems to me like they are breaking no new ground at all, but are becoming further entrenched in cliched "BoC isms"

Basically, I don't feel they themselves completely believe in whatever "Boards of Canada" used to mean to them, anymore. It seems like they are restless and dissatisfied, at least in most of the recent interviews I've read (the topic of Mike's fatherhood excepted).

Well... maybe it's just the closet moralist in me, but I'll actually feel better when I know that BoC have received some compensation for their work, especially since it appears that whoever released them took advantage of BoC in the first place.

But I'm crazy, too. The other day I FINALLY bought Helios's "Unomia" on Bleep but ended up using the mp3s I already had because they were higher quality anyway. I just like to think that I support art that I really like.

Plus, it will be nice to have them remastered and stuff.

And.. I pretty much buy anything that says "Boards of Canada" on it.

I just get tired of people assuming that BoC are these pure, starry-eyed arteests who shouldn't be burdened with terrestrial concerns like their fanbase or their marketing. While I wouldn't exactly call BoC cynical, I think they have always been very aware of their image.

Whenever they moan about people distorting their image in an interview it irritates me. They openly admit that they included all the satanic references on Geogaddi as "easter eggs for fans", and then they get bent out of shape when their satanic/cult image grows a bit beyond their control? Boo-hoo.

BoC are great artists, but one thing that comes across loud and clear in their interviews, is they are very conscious of the sorts of moods and feelings they are trying to evoke with their music. They very carefully and meticulously craft sonic worlds for the listener to inhabit. I think it's useful, therefore, to see them as not just artistic dreamers, but artistic manipulators.

In other words, I wouldn't fall too in love with the vision you have of BoC, hills west, as I don't think it's entirely accurate. Also, I don't think there's much danger of BoC getting too popular; their sound is too unique. So bring on the boxed set, I say...

It only seems like Boards is getting really popular. I mean, certainly they are more so now than ever before, but it's all relative, really. The amount of people out there who have even heard of Boards is infinitessimal compared to the greater music listening population. Whenever I get into music conversations with random people out here in SF, only those in VERY SMALL circles of electro heads know of BoC. Most others--even those with presumably pretty hip tastes in music--are utterly clueless.

Hills, Hills, Hills. I hope you've slept off the booze by now. We all* like a drink and we all like to think of our favourite music being privately made for us only - it really speaks to me. When you like music like BOC you get used to having it all to yourself and a few trusted friends. If they beocme more popular you feel less special, like you've become less unique somehow. It's normal ego stuff and hapens all the time. We're sold this myth of how we're all wondefully unique and whilst that's true to an extent ( for example, when you lose someone you've lost something utterly irreplaceable) we're not always as special as we'd like to believe. When something goes mainstream it becomes less special. People don't treat it with the respect it deserves and it get's taken for granted. Who wants's BOC to be taken for granted?

Okay, but as SilentMorning just said, BOC aren't about to go mainstream. The numbers are way off. Also the boxed set is going to be a fans only thing not the breakthrough release that get's BOC into the Sunday supplements and The South Bank Show**.

If you're happy with what you've got so far that's fine but alot of poeple want this music out in a decent format and with BOC getting the reward. If BOC had never mentioned releasing this stuff we'd still ask for it but they have, so we wait in anticipation like we do with all BOC's releases. We probbaly have no clue what unreleased material BOC have even after the demo tapes and the old tunes we've heard so if you need to know that BOC have some private music then I'd rest easy.

The old tunes stuff was leaked and you can't turn back time so we are where we are.

* Obviously not all, it's just a turn of phrase.

It's so bad to think some kinds of music or artists are not for everyone, it's a privatistic use of music... the concept is every kind of music or artist is of all and for ALL, but not all are for every kind of music... not the contrary

thank you.

i don't care how secretive and mysterious boc are, it would feel so much better to have them released and remastered. they should have never mentioned "wanting to do it with warp" if they weren't going to release it.

You people are freaking out over a bunch of old tracks that the brothers might think aren't even worth releasing to the public.
I am not saying that they aren't good songs, but have you ever thought about the possibility that they don't consider the old tunes good enough for their own taste to release them to the public?
About the MySpace ads, it seems like many of you would affirm that BOC is way too good to rely on MySpace, when a lot of you people and smaller artists (including me) are there.
What is so wrong about a place in which you can legally promote and share your music? I mean, you can even embed a BOC song into your profile without it being illegal.
Guys, I suggest you just stick to the music and cut the bullshit aside, just like BOC does.

"Mike: We'd much rather that people find our music by themselves, you know, so that it's something that feels like it belongs to them. If it was up to us there would be no promotion for our music at all. MHTRTC was a one-off moment of magic you can't possibly repeat - because of the aforementioned situation. Wasn't it? Is it fair to expect another album of such class? Best thing to do in a situation like this is to disappear for good... and let legend begin." :?
