Ok guys this is going to be tough for all of us.
Good news: I found the source of the main melody. Bad news: it's featured in a vintage gay bear porn video. Here's the link. You won't have to see any action though, the track is right at the beginning of the film.
Yes, that is the kind of porn I'm into. I wish I didn't have to share it as much as you didn't want to find out.
Now leaving that behind, I highly doubt the track was composed for this film, the question is, where is it actually from?

Isn't the source just this one? And the track there just happens to be accidentally similar?Radiobuzz wrote:Ok guys this is going to be tough for all of us.

Whatever it is, the porn song is definitely influenced by Isham's song, but I'm pretty sure this is the one being sampled.Basefree wrote:Isn't the source just this one? And the track there just happens to be accidentally similar?Radiobuzz wrote:Ok guys this is going to be tough for all of us.

The melody in the porn is similar but I don't think it's been sampled on Semena. Yes, it's a droney synth pad but that sound is a default patch on so many synths. The only melody I hear in the porn is F# to F, but Semena starts with F#, F, G#, repeats and builds from there, including octaves. Despite the Semena sound being deteriorated, to me it's still clearer than the sound in the porn - especially as the track progresses.Radiobuzz wrote:Whatever it is, the porn song is definitely influenced by Isham's song, but I'm pretty sure this is the one being sampled.
I don't think the Semena synth line is sampled at all. There'd be no reason to do so when it's such a basic sound to generate and the keyboard clicking sound in the porn would have been a bugger (!) to remove anyway.
I also can't really hear the similarity with the Isham song either.
OK, I feel like I need to say something positive now. Nice beard!
Yeah there's a similarity in mood and sound but BOC didn't sample it. SM is a more refined piece of composition.Basefree wrote:Isn't the source just this one? And the track there just happens to be accidentally similar?Radiobuzz wrote:Ok guys this is going to be tough for all of us.

Now fair enough the music on this porn clip did come in right at the beginning before the 'action', but unfortunately for me to the right was an advertising loop of 'JuicyBoys' going elbow-deep!!
I'm now going to take two valium and call my therapist....
...what subtlety?

Gay BEAR porn. Bear is a term used in the gay community to describe a large, usually quite burly, possibly hairy, gay man. A "BEAR".mondaysleeper wrote:wtf is gay porn bear?
Saying "gay bear" is pretty redundant, but I assume it was phrased that way to avoid any confusion with beastiality. Also, just saying BEAR, might not be understood

The idea of an 'original speed' of the track itself? I'm not sure this is the case... I understand it as being recorded and played back at the same constant speed - just with the tape itself running slower than standard VHS to make the audio dropouts and loss of fidelity more prominent.WorkerAtThePosyPalace wrote:Now, the brothers did say they had the motor on the VHS Deck running super slowly, so we need to know the original speed.
i-e, performed with the tape already recording slowly, and then played back at that same slow speed, no change but a good amount of quality loss.EOIN: If I had to pick something in particular, maybe the texture of the strings in “Semena Mertvykh.” It was performed into a dissected VHS deck with the motor running super slowly, so you can hear all the pockmarks, the dropouts on the tape.
Tape that records at a slower speed will lose quality because less of the tape reel per inch is being used to store. Like how SP and LP modes work on a VHS deck - LP achieves the Long Play time by recording at a slower tape speed, therefore using up less of the tape, but at the expense of video quality.
Hmm yeah well why not.bravo777 wrote:the way the song was written reminded me of a dark version of echus.Basefree wrote:They are like night and day to me, so not at all. I don't think Echus was an inspiration on this tune, as witnessed by the borrowed soundtrack bit ealier here.bravo777 wrote:does this remind anyone of echus?
Anyone else think the gay bear looks like Dan Deacon?Radiobuzz wrote:Good news: I found the source of the main melody. Bad news: it's featured in a vintage gay bear porn video. Here's the link. You won't have to see any action though, the track is right at the beginning of the film.
I'm a little surprised that so many people are convinced BOC 'stole' or 'sampled' the music for this piece! Just because they used a VHS recorder to get that grainy, uneven sound doesn't mean they got it from a movie. Most VHS machines had phono inputs allowing you to use them as (low-quality) audio recorders - I remember overdubbing music onto adverts and documentaries I'd recorded as a teenager, simply because it was a novelty. Besides I think the boys are more than capable composers themselves.
Also, although among the links posted here there are numerous pieces that have a similar 'sound' or a couple of chords in common, they are all highly filmic in that they create an expectation of things to come; scares, intrigues, developments of some sort. But SM does no such thing; it is utterly devoid of expectation or anticipation - more like reluctant but complete resignation.

Well, they most likely interpolated this. I'm not sure if your point was to say they came up with this melody on their own, because I think it's pretty obvious they didn't. They mention Isham in interviews and have a habit of interpolating things.
