Noise/Drone megathread
Lets discuss noise and drone music. Im sure there must be some fans on this board.
Some of my current favourites:
Some of my current favourites:
Sagan: In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.
Basinski: I wanted Cascade to become this crystalline organism like a star or a liquid crystal spaceship, a jellyfish traveling through the galaxy…

I like drone as long as it isn't merely a long piece of monotonous noise or deep basses. I like it when the music incorporates repetition and melody. An example of this is the band Belong (on Kranky). If you're interested in their more droney pieces check out their first album, because on their second album their style is distinctly different (but not at the expense of quality in my opinion).
this is a great track by Belong from their first LP that contains repetition and melody. Love it.
Another piece of work that fits my prerequisites is the Disintegration Loops by Basinsky, although I'm not quite sure whether that strictly qualifies as drone?

Agreed. Well, BoC and Sunn O))) are tied, though very different.Ustillhavefriends wrote:Sunn are an all time favorite - as are Earth. Grimmrobe Demos and Black One are absolute classics for me.lankydoom wrote:Yessss!
SUNN O))). One of my favourites - White 1 and White 2 are quite special to me. My wall still puts me in my place, every time:)
Earth are amazing too. i remember when i first heard earth2 and i became everything and nothing all at once.
Black one is amazing. All of their albums are amazing.
What are your thoughts on the new (not so new now) earth direction? i really like it. In particular I love the newer version of ouroboros is broken. i saw earth last year here is Sydney, met Dylan and the band and had a beer with them. Haha Adrienne asked for a band recommendation and I suggested Boards of course. i tried to explain it to her but she agreed it was best left for her to listen and go on the journey herself.
Oren Ambarchi is a great noise artist - Being australian he does gigs once in a while down our way which is nice. i saw him live at Sydney opera house with Boris - Lou Reed curated a noise night and yeah well it was noisy and good:)

I know I've posted this in another thread before, but it's so good that I think it's worth posting again:
Puff A Pound - Noise VHS Fanzine
I don't know how many copies were made. I'd love to find one someday.

Pretty amazing stuff (especially BCM), reminds me a bit my favourite ambient/drone project Bass Communion of Steven Wilson known from his other work within the more conventional prog-rock vein. I would recommend "Ghost On The Magnetic Tape", truly exceptional piece of music based mostly on acoustic sound sources like old 78 rpm records, piano, flute, etc. Really dark, spectral, organic music. Also worth checking the collaboration with Vidna Obmana (as Continuum) with sharper but still very natural, spacious sound, and "Molotov and Haze" album, made using electric guitar and laptop only, very noisy but also has some beautiful moments:

Check out Above, Convenience Store on Soundcloud, you wont be disppaointed if you're into that stuff. They also just released their first album on Sparkwood Records. Can grab it on BC, just check link on their soundcloud.
Really beautiful atmospheric tunes, some of the best I've heard in this genre. I'm a huge fan
They're big BoC fans too and alot of the music is inspired by Twin Peaks, so they're more than alright in my book!!

That's really, really good, thanks.Amo Bishop Roden wrote:Not noise, but some of the best drone out there. Sadly this band reverted back to making more traditional post-rock after making this gem of a record, but that makes it all the more special. Listen to the whole album, it's good drone. Like, maybe SotL good.

i kinda like ryoji ikeda, he's more minimalist than harsh, the rhythms kinda sound like autechre if they dabbled in Morse code and dial-up modems

Bought this and been listening to it constantly for the past few weeks. I think it is SotL good, could well end up as one of my favourite albums.jcnporter wrote:That's really, really good, thanks.Amo Bishop Roden wrote:Not noise, but some of the best drone out there.
