Isn't it high time that electronic music...
..stopped getting lumped in with dance?
For the umpteenth time, while filling in a questionnaire on music, and going through the predefined categories to select the proper one, the closest to what I was looking for was: "Electronic/ Dance"
Grrr.

Because the genre Electronic is an umbrella for a lot of styles. Dance is a style in the electronic genre as is Techno or IDM. Even a vast maturity of pop music of today is Electronic music. To quote Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music "Unlike conventional music, electronic music isn't played, per se. It is PROGRAMMED" http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ this is one of the best sites regarding the arising of Electronic music.
Not sure why Electronic and Dance are put together like that. I guess it is because the industry isolate dance because it is easy to distinguish from all other "non- dance able" electronic music.

I think he's saying jazz isn't JUST Miles Davis. Just like how Rock nRoll isn't JUST elvisfujee wrote:Please don't say you're dissing DavisThe Telepathic Kid wrote:well still people think of jazz as old timey bebop miles davis shit

Ah, I remember those days. Also "Here is the latest romantic ballad by Alejandro Sanz turned into a cheesy trance tune!".Basefree wrote:Absolutely, it reminds me of those cheap 90s no-name trance compilations you could buy for two euros back in the day.

While I'm here, Aesthetics, I've seen that site thrown around many times, and I seriously feel that while it's comprehensive, it's a little too subjective at points (note; the guy's takes on the Garage genre), and is a little uninformed about stuff he doesn't know i.e. putting BoC in Illbient and what genre is "Speed Garage"? that seems to be some mutant form of dubstep before dubstep. Half of the genres are debatable that they even existed or aren't proto forms of genres that now exist, like Drill 'n' Bass (or as here, Experimental Jungle) is now considered to be Breakcore.
This site is clearly not maintained, and really shows why I just don't bother with genres when explaining music except to those who actually know what I'm talking about.
