George Duke video posted on Facebook

Post by plazz »

Boards of Canada official Facebook posted a Youtube video to For Love by George Duke, who died today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23592806

Very rare for them to post anything anywhere, especially stuff not promo related.

Great song, RIP

Nice nod from them, never heard the guy personally though. I wonder if they're into Pete Namlook who also passed last year. That kinda hit me as I was just getting into his music around that time.

Pete Namlook died? Damn, I didn't even know. I'm not a huge fan but I've enjoyed some of his work.

Nope, that was I Love You More.

diss...this album is SICK [george duke].
unfortunately this kinda ruins the thundercat album for me. its kinda of a direct bite. note for note at times....not even a cover.

the duke is THE duke.

What a surprise. I've listened to Duke a bit over the years and heard of his passing. Since BoC pretty much never doing anything like this, he must have had pretty special significance to them. He definitely liked to mess around with synths, but I'm guessing it was more than just that.

I like to think that, somewhere on the face of this planet, a fan is obsessively scrutinizing every single Duke release and every single YouTube video, searching for possible clues for a new BoC album.

I never knew his solo output, but I'm a sucker for his work with Zappa. A tragic loss, sadly.

I was kind of shocked that not only BoC are Zappa/Duke fans, but so many Twoism folks are into them as well.

On the surface, Zappa and BoC seemingly have very little in common...but I'd say they both fit the genre of "progressive" music. i.e. Music that attempts to push music-as-a-whole in new directions.

Regardless of the style, most of my favorite music is exactly that...stuff I've never heard anywhere else. That's the link between Zappa and BoC for me, anyway.

Where are you getting Zappa/Duke and not just Duke? I know Duke played with Zappa but it seems like that video was not very Zappa-related from what I can tell. Or are you talking about what you've discovered BoC fans are into?

I've always associated Duke with Zappa because some of my favorite FZ albums feature him....and FZ's band was where he really started making a name for himself in the early/mid-70s.

Maybe I'm just making a stupid assumption, but I would think a lot of people who would consider themselves "George Duke fans" would likely have first heard him with Zappa's band (and thus be Zappa fans as well). Quite a bit of Duke's solo stuff is in a similar vein...with the silliness, 70's prog/jazz/fusion style, etc.

Also, that song from BoC's Facebook is on Duke's album "The Aura Will Prevail", which includes two FZ songs: Uncle Remus (co-written by Duke & FZ) and Echidna's Arf.
