[FAKE] Old Tunes Vol. 2 and A Few Old Tunes in FLAC.

Post by NEUROMUTE »

Okay, here's the deal. As I am notorious for being unable to properly rip a cassette, and that I have minimal computer storage space, I need some help. If someone has a really nice tape deck, I'm talking Nakamichi or Denon, I'd like to send someone copies of OTv2 and AFOT to rip in .flac. The copy would be put onto a nice TDK or Maxell and shipped to whoever can /really/ do this. I know that a lot of people would like OTv2 and AFOT .flac rips, but I am just not qualified. Whoever can do this well, we'll talk. Thanks! :P

How are you going to prove without dispute that your tapes are real and not fakes again?

If you'd like photographs, or minimal sound bytes in .flac to prove they're not fake, I can do that with Audacity, I think.

I'm not sure if that would be enough, you'd have to disclose where you got them from. But I can't rip them, I haven't got a deck, the guy who has though would surely like to know.

And would you really be willing to send out tapes that can sell for thousand dollars without second thoughts about the ripper? You could easily be scammed if you had the real ones.

No, no, I'd be making a copy of the tapes. I have an AIWA AD-WX909 that I would utilize to copy the tapes. There are little differences in the tape that you can't get on the currently available .mp3s. I mean, they're definitely not like some hidden message you can only get with the tapes, but it's definitely better quality. Also, I know this is going to sound extremely shady, but all I can say is that I bought the tapes at a reputable online closing sale for a semi-nearby recording studio. I'd disclose more, but I was instructed that it would be bad for the studio's reputation. In any case, I'd very much like someone to rip copies of these tapes. I'd like it on my iPod, too! :)

Damn, I sound like "Dave" towards the end of that post. "I'm so glad to... Take care of the studio..."

I didn't come here to start another argument. Suspend everything, all I need to know is: will someone rip the tapes in .flac or not?

How about a rip of the Roygbiv (Alphaquest Mix) DAT cassette you claim to own?

You can't guarantee your tape copy of the original would be 1:1 the same, in fact I don't know how it could be. I will be direct and say I don't believe you possess the originals.

Maybe the studio you bought them from could make a lossless transfer, which you would then post here for spectral analysis. As unedited side A/B rip, because it's the only way to keep all ripped data without possible screw-ups in the splitting process.

I can understand your skepticism. The studio I purchased them from isn't quite near me, it's a little further than I'm willing to drive. However, the best I can do is bring my tape deck to a friend's house, or even the recording studio in Jupiter to see if I can get a rip. I may do that tonight. Either way, I will post my results in this thread as soon as I can. I'll do OTv2 first, seeing as how it's the longer of the two.

What's the point in doing a flac rip of a 2nd generation copy of a tape? Anything you gain with flac you're going to lose from the tape-to-tape transfer, surely?

I suppose so. I know little about all of this. What is the best possible course of action I can take? Just record it on Audacity at a friend's house, or take it to a studio?

I'm just going to record "Buckie High" (seeing as it's a favorite of mine,) on Audacity, and someone tell me if it's worth taking to a studio.

EDIT: Neuormute has since gone back and edited the original comment to say: Roygbiv (Alphaquest Mix) DAT cassette copy (fake). Too late though cause there are about 12 different replies with the original text in it.

Buckie High link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wei9vq2tn1oai ... 0High.flac
If it checks out in spectral, I'll go to the studio. If it's a copy, I'll weep for a few days and then get over it.

I was ready to trash you after the whole Closes debacle but this looks pretty convincing. Here are the spectrals...

Image

I'm no expert so I can't say for sure, but it looks like we have more detail in the flac version.

EDIT: Listening to it there are a couple of other things that pop out that make this look genuine. The start point for the file is slightly different, as is the left/right pan of the white noise hi hat that runs through the song. That's the sound that's filling out the upper frequencies of the spectrum, which is to be expected from white noise as it contains all those high frequencies.

So, I should get them transferred at Echo Beach recording studio?
