Yes ... the Ennis House! aaaaand we are back to Blade Runner (one of the filming locations): ostensibly the best film of all time (in my ridiculously un-humble opinion!). i love how so many of things i hold so dear are somehow all so intricately connected.re-phaelam-ed wrote:yep...SICK! top of the hill.egbdf wrote:Frank Lloyd Wright house in Hollywood?Group Hex wrote: Ugh. I didn't liked this song until I realised every new loop enters through the left channel and then repeats itself to infinity right at the middle. Reminds me of an old DOS tetris game.

I find it such a sad moment when the synths start weaving in towards the end. This sounds autistic as hell, but they remind me of weather indicators going nuts before an approaching storm. And as if I connected this track with the image that is behind the disc in the package, but I have no reasonable explanation for that.
The synths also remind me a bit of Autechre's Teartear.

Is that an autistic thing? Because I do that all the time. I realize that for lots of words/ideas I have these weird images--mostly visual--that get played in my mind whenever I think of those words/ideas. I usually don't notice, but lately I've been picking up on them and realize they've always been there.Basefree wrote: And as if I connected this track with the image that is behind the disc in the package, but I have no reasonable explanation for that.

I'm far from being a psychiatrist, but I believe that's on the opposite end from autism. Autistic people tend to take rationality and logic to its extremes, even though that doesn't keep them from developing an artistic vein at all. I guess those associations are just stuff that a healthy brain does, after all, we're constantly opening new pathways and creating new synapses, so that is bound to happen. It's usually a sign of creativity.

I don't think that's autism, it sounds more like Synesthesia, and I reckon most of us have at least a touch of that.egbdf wrote:Is that an autistic thing? Because I do that all the time. Quote from synesthete.org: "Synesthesia is a perceptual condition of mixed sensations: a stimulus in one sensory modality (e.g., hearing) involuntarily elicits a sensation/experience in another modality (e.g. vision)"
I often visualize sounds as abstract shapes and colours without even realising I'm doing it, and full on Synesthetes might have, for instance, particular colours for each letter of the alphabet, or personality associations for every number etc.
...what subtlety?
I apologize my confusing wording, I meant the weather indicator thing. And it wasn't meant to be taken literally, just as a lightweight joke. I'm not an autist and I've nothing against that kind of people.
Was more referring to it that probably these tracks spawn more real life associations and memories instead of weather systems.

I think it's interesting to discuss autism and its characteristics, even if it's a lightweight ot throwaway mention, becase a lot of us -- me included -- misunderstands many aspects of autism. I've dealt with people with different degrees of autism, and it can be pretty disconcerting to think of how things can go utterly wrong. I feel terribly afraid of making any blunders.
As for synaesthesia, I've always been curious whether it's a condition that has various degrees -- like autism -- or if it's something you either have or you don't. I mean, I can make associations with sounds and images or such, but I'm aware that it's all very conscious; it's just my brain cherry-picking associations that feel pleasant. As far as I am aware, synaesthesia is something automatic and involuntary, and those associations don't change -- if an oboe "looks" blue, then it will always "look" blue and will automatically "look" blue whenever you hear it. With people that are not synaesthetes, those associations can vary, depending on mood, state of mind and so on. A piece of music sometimes can sound like winter, sometimes like rain, sometimes like flowers. And often those associations depend a lot of context; some BoC can sound like faded blue, because that seems to be a very common image in the kind of visuals that BoC draw inspiration from.

The ongoing joke is that a lot of electronic music is associated with autism, like Kraftwerk and Autechre. At least it's what I always joke about with my friends, and I once even googled an autism forum where those bands were described "soothing", which only fueled the fire. I think Boards' music is too lifelike in general to be considered in the similar way (autistic), but Jacquard's beat is something I could joke about.

U saying about some autistic sound. Its almost true.
A few weeks ago I was "high" first time in five years as I remember (dont know, can I speak about marihuana here?). So as I know my feelings will be easy excitable I took mp3 player and between talk with friends spent about 20 minutes to listen TH.
Gemini was
First pad so beautiful. I remember I yelled "Genius! Brilliant!" and smiling from ear to ear. And so with the whole. But before this I thought its a middle class song. Coz I didnt understand it.
After rftd and wc which was good too I started listen Jacquard Causeway. Remember autistic? I felt myself like a man who listen hooves of big horse with absolutely ugly mechanical machine inside body. Loud, spread noises. 2 minutes was enought for me.

This is the best description I have read of JC.arvy wrote:My strongest feelings to this track was the very first time i heard it, it was like a slap in the facelike some mechanical creature looking at you and trying to move, but it can't...also sometimes it reminds if some wild animal caught in to trap and trying to escape...
"Our absolute stand-out track on this album is “Jacquard Causeway.” Possibly one of the most ambitious electronic tracks I’ve heard, this tune illustrates in six minutes and thirty five seconds the formation of a heavenly body from primordial soup to galaxy. Beginning with detuned synths whirring and bleeping about chaotically, the track is framed from the start by a heavy, rotating beat existing at the center like a black hole. As the tune progresses, the synths and samples slowly begin to synchronize their rhythms and harmonies around the unifying object. The beat acts as the creative, connecting force of the universe. As the parts begin to show coherence and resonance with each other both rhythmically and tonally, huge, glorious chords are created highlighting and symbolizing the beauty of synchronicity in the universe. This perhaps is the most positive message to be gained from this album: that out of the waste land and chaos of the modern world, the human race faces (to put it in the words of Terence Mckenna) a “kind of hyper organizing force...the transcendental object. These anticipations of an unspeakable transcendent reality, that are always clothed in the assumptions of the individual artist and the society in which he or she is working, are in fact genuine. You don’t have to give yourself over to fundamentalist religion to connect with the fact that human history is an adventure.”

I don't know how many have noticed that here, but all of those little whistling melodies, though they are unsynchronized with the beat, they all last exactly two bars. I don't think BoC have ever ventured this close to process music, or whatever you may call it. Personally, I'm interested in what would happen if they keep pursuing that path.

Wow, cool. In fact, as I was writing that post, I had this idea in my head that Jacquard Causeway kind of sounds like the melodies are living things which could be reproducing and evolving by a natural process. Of course, in the hands of BoC, a song like that lasts for six minutes, whereas an actually avantgarde and experimental composer would have it lasting for six hours, surely.aperture wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative ... 2Femergent

You want to say that most of all hateness coz of non-deterministic sounds which are not used to hearing in music? i'd said almost all BOC songs have own randomness, but JC has it a LOT. With every new quarter. Moreover, very massive bit.aperture wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative ... 2Femergent
