A nice expansion on his glitch leanings as per the Rene Hell split and the Hecker album.
Some beautiful moments, Boring Angel, Zebra, Still Life and Chrome Country come to mind.
Problem Areas and Americans were both too... violent/physical for my tastes. Similar to Returnal in that respect.
The rest of it wasn't super-memorable as individual tracks go but will probably grow on me in time.
I'm feelin' a strong 6 to a light 7. I do gotta say, it disappointed me less than Tomorrow's Harvest.

I just meant in terms of hype-to-quality.
But Boards took me a bit to get in to whereas OPN immediately clicked on this weird level. So IDK.

I haven't been able to pick out favorites quite yet. Each time I've listened to the album, I've just closed my eyes and taken the journey. The whole thing is so cohesive that its been hard for me to discern between the tracks. But yes Americans is a highlight for me as well. Such a behemoth of a track. I think the final run between Cyro to Chrome Country is probably his greatest work to date. This whole album is just so enigmatic and captivating, I can tell its going to take a while until it fully unfurls.

I'd say this is as good if not better than Tomorrow's Harvest, I thought Tomorrow's Harvest was a light/decent 8/10 though.

But of course once again this is one of those threads which people need to grow up and learn about opinions.

I expressed my opinion in barely one sentence on the previous page. Hardly the equivalent of the kind of multi-page "get over it" comments and troll threads we see posted on the BOC forum and on WATMM. It's a pretty weird comparison - OPN and BoC. BoC are still all about tunes and melody to me. OPN is far more disruptive; more textural and intellectual than BoC.

OPN vs Ae would be a better choice of comparison as they both put the intellectual before the emotional in their music.

As with everything else I've heard by OPN, the new one is pretty unmemorable. Some nice sounds and synth tones. Some clever bits of sound manipulation. No memorable tunes or song structures to talk about. I can analyse it and admire the work that went into it but it doesn't move me.

I'm not saying it's a bad album. It's just not something that presses my buttons.

I think it's really good, especially from Zebra onwards. I always think it seems to finish really quickly which highlights how absorbing it is. It's all about those last two tracks for me, some of OPN's best. Loving those MIDI sounds but can see how they could divide opinion, I guess it's something you'll either connect with or won't, I think the fact it's got a pretty broken structure is keeping me going back for more like a memory game. I can tire of music quickly whereby I remember exactly what's coming next after a couple of listens.

Listened to it for the first time. Based on the first spin, I think I like replica better, but I'm guessing this is gonna grow on me alot.

Listened to R Plus Seven a few times now. He's really stripped his sound down on this one, almost bare bones. It works in parts, but when it doesn't work it's a bit tedious tbh. I really like the arps in Boring Angel, Chrome Country is lush, as is Cryo, Problem Areas has got nice arps and sounds, but overall the whole album feels a bit empty. Not a patch on any of his other stuff especially Replica.

Just noticed all his solo albums begin with 'R'.
