Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
I somewhat agree with your review. I was expecting something epic. I wish he would do more "The Fragile" type stuff. Bring back acoustic drums!naicob wrote:Nothing surprising, nothing new. Sounds like you didn't even listen to album.
And if you're honestly acting like over the course of two decades his work has been exactly the same then that's absurd. His discography is very diverse in sound and this is no exception (in fact this record is the most diverse in sound than any other he's made). Last time I seem to recall lyrics like that from him was, oh...never? Last time I recall a saxophone in an NIN song was Purest Feeling (which wasn't even an official release, it was the demo for PHM made in 1988). Ah, but it's "emo" and the "same lame schtick for over 2 decades now". Sorry, my bad.
It's funny you complain about simplistic chord progressions on a site devoted to a band that recently released an album comprised of mostly that. Yeah, a lot of the chord progressions are simple, and they happen to invoke more of a connection for me than those in Tomorrow's Harvest.
Like, no offense but this is such an ignorant generalization it's astonishing. It really leads me to believe you've never heard PHM (Synthpop), or TDS (Industrial Rock), or Still (multiple genres), or The Fragile (MANY genres), or Year Zero (glitch with an electro-industrial tinge), Ghosts (many, many genres - post-rock, ambient, ambient techno, industrial rock, noise, etc...and no lyrics because it's instrume- oh wait, that's right, all of his work for the last two decades is the same, so there must be lyrics that are exactly the same and I'm not hearing them, thanks for the heads up!) and the "emo" comment is almost offensive considering NIN has never been and never will be "emo" - this album containing nothing remotely close to "emo" in its lyrical content. I guess if someone writes a song that's dark or sad it's "emo", huh?
I know you joined this year so I'll just say, generally when we dislike a band (because you obviously haven't listened to his work fully or thoroughly based on your remarks) we say "it's not my thing". We don't make broad, sweeping generalizations.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
I listened to it and gave it a short and honest review. I've listened to all of his works because my girl really enjoys his music and plays it all the time, whether I like it or not. She was honest enough to point out that he's been doing the same thing for quite a while now and is somewhat disappointed in his latest effort. I listened to about 5 seconds of what you posted and immediately thought "yup, same shit". If you're referring to the sax, then all I can say is you seem easily impressed.Sounds like you didn't even listen to album.

They might also be simple in TH, but there is a lot more going on-- as is almost always the case with BoC. They are presented in a different manner. The album as a whole is distinct and different from the rest of their work-- a difference one can't help but notice when listening to each of their albums. You might not feel the same way and I couldn't care less. I hope I can be an example for you. It's funny you complain about simplistic chord progressions on a site devoted to a band that recently released an album comprised of mostly that. Ah, now I remember you-- you're the guy that adores labels and genres...Like, no offense but this is such an ignorant generalization it's astonishing. Anyhow, forgetting the superficial genre cover and simply listening to the structure, melodies, beats, etc., I can't help but feel that it all sounds very much the same. I admire your knowledge of labels and genres, you should be a librarian.
Yeah, emo as in tugging at very obvious emotional strings, in a very obvious way, nearly all the time.
You assume that everyone here thinks like you (until they disagree). Your opening post is broad and very generalized (to say the least). I hurt your feelings by being critical of an artist you like because I didn't realize this thread was dedicated for the sole purpose of admiring your tastes. We don't make broad, sweeping generalizations.
Do I need to remind you of the pathetically childish and extremely generalized threads you've started?
Grow up and please try to remember that it's all a matter of taste-- a very personal thing.
Me? Grow up? Excuse me, I'm not the one stating something blatantly false. If your girl thinks he's been doing the same thing for the last two decades then she's not listening, nor do I have any reason to believe you have been listening either based on what you have stated.naicob wrote:I listened to it and gave it a short and honest review. Grow up and please try to remember that it's all a matter of taste-- a very personal thing.
Example: Year Zero
*Emo is not an applicable term for any song on this album
*Does not sound the same as anything else he has created
More examples: listen to Ruiner, then go listen to A Warm Place, then go listen to The New Flesh, then go listen to Zero-Sum, then go listen to Adrift and At Peace, then go listen to Only, then go listen to anything from Ghosts...you're telling me he's doing the same things with these songs? Seriously? That's like saying Peacock Tail, Julie and Candy and Happy Cycling are all exactly the same.
You have not "hurt my feelings". You would be blatantly aware of that had you done so, as my response would have been very different. Again, there is such irony in your words. I don't assume everyone here thinks like me - not remotely. We've established there are people here who LOVE Tomorrow's Harvest. I don't, but I don't rain on anyone's parade if they do. Any and all comments I make regarding TH I feel are generally true (true in that Nothing is Real IS repetitive, that Jacquard Causeway does have a "sloppy" bitcrusher beat, i.e.). Furthermore I would never lie to justify my opinion. Do I need to remind you of your incessant walls of text regarding how awful smartphones and technology are? Do I need to show you the screencaps of where other Twoism members think you're insane because of it?
>If you're referring to the sax, then all I can say is you seem easily impressed.
No. It's an 8/10 album. It's not like I'm BLOWN AWAY by the sax or anything. It's just that I've felt pretty much everything important to me has sucked this year except for this. The point about the saxophone was merely to demonstrate that he's not just doing the same exact thing for two decades.
You're being the epitome of irony and hypocrisy right now. I only need to take one of your points: you claim he's using the same beats. I cold make a video showcasing beats from every album that would quickly prove your statement incorrect. Who's making the generalizations and being childish here?
>Your opening post is broad and very generalized
Honestly that brings in to question whether or not you have sufficient enough reading comprehension to hold a discussion on the internet. My OP was nothing but me saying that I enjoyed the album and that I thought it was the best so far this year - I stated an opinion, I made no generalizations. See, that's why I said "short review from ME", not "you guys all have to agree with me". I don't think anyone on this board other than you (and perhaps Lens Laque just because he hates me for no reason) would consider my OP to be "very generalized". What is it that I would be generalizing in the first place? That the album is good? It's an opinion, again.
I created this thread so that we could have discussion about it (the album). You were the
only one generalizing and being childish. It's one thing to share an opinion, as Polar Sky did. It's another thing to lie and call music that isn't remotely "emo" as such because you feel it is, with complete disregard to what emo in terms of music actually refers to, and it's another thing to lie and state that an artist's work over the course of two decades sounds exactly the same and uses the same beats and lyrics.
And more going on in Tomorrow's Harvest? LOL, give me a break. No, no there was more going on in GEOGADDI. I hear a lot going on in The Beach at Redpoint. If I compare a track like this to a track like Cold Earth, I hear much more going on in the former, not the latter.
As for your thing about genres and labels - I have no comment. I have no idea what your issue is with this and I do not care.

Isn't it funny just how fast a thread can become really stupid? Man, I wonder what the reaction would be had I gone to the Radiohead thread and said "they've been doing the same thing for the past two decades, same depressing shtick, same beats and lyrics", or the Aphex Twin thread and said "all he does is breakbeat glitchy tracks and that's all he's been doing for two decades".FernieCanto wrote:
Look, I'm aware I type a lot, and I'm aware I'm not perfect. I'm aware I've acted inappropriately from time to time and I've changed a lot and tried my best to make a conscious effort to change. I know I have a tendency to argue but this really isn't one of those situations. I wanted to discuss an album and the first reply was...well, something seriously off, and anyone who has listened to NIN would understand this. It was so off I felt it warranted such replies, so MJ.gif all you want. You have no dog in this fight and it's fine.
Even if you haven't listened to NIN, I think it's pretty clear my OP isn't generalizing anything, and that is where I think (among other things) naicob is indisputably incorrect.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
Yes, grow up. If you still haven't learned that we are able to experience things differently as individuals then you have years if not decades of growing up to do. In the realm of personal artistic taste, I can't imagine anything being blatantly false. If you enjoyed eating your own shit for dinner, it would still be a matter of taste.Me? Grow up? Excuse me, I'm not the one stating something blatantly false. If your girl thinks he's been doing the same thing for the last two decades then she's not listening, nor do I have any reason to believe you have been listening either based on what you have stated.
'Emo' is an applicable term for how I see it as blatant emotional string tugging of sensitive people (often teenagers, but not limited to) who enjoy immersing themselves in obvious sadness/anger/angst. It all sounds the same to me. Deal with it. There is nothing to argue here, yet this is completely incomprehensible to you.Example: Year Zero
*Emo is not an applicable term for any song on this album
*Does not sound the same as anything else he has created
...blah blah blah. Are you done crying yet? Many people say BoC all sounds the same and it doesn't bother me one bit. Why does it hurt you so much?More examples: listen to Ruiner, then go listen to A Warm Place, then go listen to The New Flesh, then go listen to Zero-Sum, then go listen to Adrift and At Peace, then go listen to Only, then go listen to anything from Ghosts...you're telling me he's doing the same things with these songs? I'm amazed that with all your drivel about reading comprehension, you still couldn't comprehend that those few paragraphs had nothing to do with smartphones being bad, but everything to do with people incapable of thought-- you're a perfect example. Btw, I'm looking for a new smartphone or tablet-- can't decide if I should get the Galaxy note 2 (or 3) or maybe just a tablet, but I've returned two so far and can't seem to find one I'm happy with. Now I dropped my S3 and the screen broke, but other than aesthetics it works just fine. I just wish it was slightly bigger so writing would be easier because my fingers are too big and my dexterity lacking.
*ugh* Adding a sax does nothing to demonstrate anything for me. Sorry. An entire Jazz album-- now that would be something different.No. It's an 8/10 album. I shared my opinion, you didn't like it. Polar Sky agreed with some of my points. Sure, I do make generalizations here, but they are meant to help convey an opinion. It's all about proportions in this case. I have a hard time distinguishing his earliest works and his latest ones (I just don't get it, you are a superior listener). Proportionally speaking he isn't doing much in the way of something new (besides the sax!! of course). I'm pretty sure you mentioned Radiohead and Aphex Twin-- yeah, I don't care for them either...please, spare me the emotionally charged response. I've been on this board for only a short while and you're one of the most predictable posters here.

You don't seem to even understand what honesty means, good luck in finding it one day.
Never once did I imply I've heard every album this year. That would take way too long, I'd have to listen to many different bandcamp artists on top of all the well known artists and analyze all the work...you're just being unrealistic at this point. I stated that it was the "AOTY (album of the year) so far" following where I said "Short review from me: it's fucking great". I would assume that anyone with a sane mind would understand that this is a subjective opinion and infer the latter is not some sort of rule that I just made up that has to apply to everyone. I see no generalizations in my OP, only an opinion.
>Are you done crying yet? Many people say BoC all sounds the same and it doesn't bother me one bit. Why does it hurt you so much?
Are you trying to be a troll or something? You've not hurt me. I made a point and you're avoiding it. I'm quite collect.
>We hear different things. Some of us might be capable, some not. Searching for a universal truth here is psychotic, childish, idiotic, insane, stupid, infantile, egotistical-- pick one.
Oh, please - spare me.
>I'm not surprised that you have a hard time understanding this.
I understand it, I disagree with anyone who has such a problem with them. Genres are not applied prior to the production of art, they are applied afterwards. They do not have to be a device of confinement in terms of sound unless the artist wants them to be.
>spare me the emotionally charged response.
Again, I'm quite collect, so there will be no emotionally charged response. I try to take the high road and that's what I'm going to do here.
>but everything to do with people incapable of thought
In correlation to smartphones and technology. Again, I disagree with you heavily - you are welcome to disagree with me. You seem to think that it's bad we no longer have to "have to figure out how to feed and house ourselves". You think "we aren't pressed to solve problems with our intelligence, we can google them". Google does not and cannot solve every problem one encounters in their life. It can answer some math questions for you, it can get you driving directions, but can it guide you philosophically? No. All it does is provide the TOOLS to allow oneself to educate oneself. You said something along the lines of "We aren't on our way to Idiocracy, we're already there." I know this is hyperbole but the fact you'd even suggest that is astounding. The rest of the post comes off to me as a bunch of hippie drabble - no offense...and as nihilistic as I am I don't agree with your apparent desire for natural selection in modern society. Basefree agreed, responding: "It probably wasn't necessary to write this. And it's not like it's a product of the Instagram age anyway, would have to go way back in history."
But to get back on topic, I'll just be blunt: you're incorrect. If you TRULY believe that he's been doing the exact same thing for two decades, using the exact same beats, the exact same lyrics, then you're actually objectively wrong. It's not a matter of taste. Had you said "This album sucks", that would have been a matter of taste. You made a declarative statement implying something false, and I called you out on it. I am going to go to an even further extent. Here is a YouTube video I have created, containing snippets of various tracks from his main releases (and a few side ones) over roughly the past two decades (24 years, but close enough). Anyone here can view the video and see clearly that he's quite the versatile artist. I doubt you will listen though.
So, yeah, I am done with this argument. I'm going to take the advice Mexicola gave me regarding Lens, apply it to you, and move on. You are wrong. In your own words, deal with it. From now on, any and all responses blatantly false will be responded to in a simple fashion, if at all (but if you want to legitimately share your criticisms without false generalizations then you're welcome to by all means)...honestly, you're coming off to me as kinda one of those Skuppy or Throbbing Gristle fans that hates Trent for "ruining industrial", that's generally the kind of people I see spouting blatant nonsense regarding NIN.
And for the record - those who say that BoC "all sounds the same" are also incorrect, and we can see by comparing Geogaddi to The Campfire Headphase or Hi Scores to Trans Canada Highway that this is true. If it doesn't bother you, that's fantastic, you must not have obsessive compulsive disorder like I do.

Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
Can't wait to hear the more dynamic version.GH wrote:This album has been mastered in two versions, one standard, and the other for audiophiles:

PS. The first 3 posts in this thread were ok.

I like how it has nods to his older work while still sounding fresh...and I adore the album covers that have been created for it. Very reminiscent of The Downward Spiral. My favorite is the Japanese one.Moloch wrote:I like the new album.
My fav. tracks so far are probably Disappointed, Running, All Time Low and While I'm Still Here. Can't pick a top three ATM so I'll pick a top four, and it's those. All Time Low has this hip hop vibe to its pre-chorus verse that I just love, and the ending is brilliant. Plus, I think the lyrics "how did we get so high" are a double entendre of sorts, referring to both his drug usage around the time he made TDS (which was what was on his mind when making this album) and the success it garnered despite that.

Yeah, most of it sounds the same. If I didn't know better, I'd think they were all made at the same time. Thanks for the effort. I consistently hear the same (or 'similar' if you prefer something more delicate) timbres, the same transitions, same effects, same beats, and nothing surprising. 24 years and still the same damn theme-- I'm sure it sells lots of records.[url=
And yeah, when someone says BoC all sounds the same, I hear where they're coming from, even if I disagree. There is nothing false about such a statement because it all depends on what someone is listening for and that is something only the listener will know.
Nothing left to add here. Have a good day, and please don't have a heart attack.
