what about Beck, early Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Primus, early Modest Mouse?

they all have elements of them which could be considered country.

I'd consider Odelay (one of my favourite albums of all time) an alt-country record, at least one of the main strains that run through its twisted psyche.

Try not liking country music when your from Ireland (not the home of American accents) for instance, where the country has the added edge of being sang in badly mimicked American accents.

I really dislike rap music, whether it's gangsta rap or alternative stuff that's lauded among serious music hobbyists. I very rarely like a song that's being rapped over, except if the production of the background instrumental is original and outstanding, in which case I don't see the necessity of the rapping on top of it.

I know what you are saying about fleet foxes its really folk with elements of Appalachian influence which also influenced country music. Technically gospel and folk are sub genres of country. but I guess I don't consider that country by today's 'country & western' standards. Even Johnny cash wasn't considered straight country but rockabilly which obviously has elements of rock and hillbilly, what country was called before country.

In any case neo country, country pop, honkey tonk, Hillbillie boogie, 4th generation and 5th generation and this new Amish wave thing that's happening can play on rotation far far away from me along with pretty much all rap and heavy metal.

Gh you gotta link to any irish singing country in bad american accents.. that I wanna hear our of morbid curiosity.

Modest Mouse make use of those Americana reference points incredibly in their early work, I have to say. Though they sound very different, I think their combination of Americana with punk / post-punk (and in Modest Mouse's case, post-hardcore) to create something just special and quite individual makes them reminiscent of R.E.M's earlier work.

I think that paragraph could have been written better. But I'm quite tired.

I think I'm with you on this one. But it enters a grey area around the aforementioned Beck, as well as bands like They Might Be Giants who play serious music, but their lyrics usually have some tongue in cheek thing.

Despite that I'm not a huge fan of like Weird Al or song parodies like a lot of my friends are.

Though I must say some of the things The Lonely Island does I can appreciate for the production and the energy they bring to the track. I just don't have to listen to the words I guess, like every other music listener.

I was thinking about this the other day, I'm going to retract my statement about "new IDM" or whatever I was saying, because I realised it bumped into a philosophy I have. One which has been getting bopped around here lately.

Dissing an entire genre. I have a problem with that. I mean I never ever thought I'd ever like metal about 10 years ago when I started listening to BoC and Warptronica, but now I own a Boris CD, and Deafheaven's new record is on my top 25 of 2013 so far.

I think it's a little silly because you don't know what every single artist in that genre sounds like, and genres are so wide and varied these days that there needs to be hundreds of different sub categories and sub sub categories just to do justice to every band.

I mean I won't even say crunkcore as a genre is shit, despite everything coming from it being aural abuse of the highest order. There may be a crunkcore record around the corner in 2014 which will wow me and make me love the genre, I dunno. That record may already exist, it just hasn't been heard by my ears.

There's too many factors to consider if you're saying an entire genre's bad.

No it's not really offensive, ... actually no, it is offensive. He doesn't talk like an American, so why the need to sing like one.

Also, he's singing about being shook by his mama like a wagon wheel.
We have never had mamas in Ireland, and if we did we'd be trying to discourage their shaking of their offspring.

Also, if we ever had anything that resmbled a wagon wheel, I'm pretty sure it would have been refered to as a wheel off a horse cart.

It's just, there's a huge huge chunk of Ireland (I mean really big, like all of the midlands, and more besides) where this is the closest to musical culture their is. A little bit of Irish traditional music, but huge amounts of American style country.

That song I linked. I was talking to a young girl (daughter of a relative) the other day. She's just approaching her early teens. That song is her favourite song. That is probably representative of this part of my country.

I've just had a couple of reviews come back for my album, both from Ireland.

Both, particularly the most recent draw attention to the fact that it's hard to imagine somebody from where I'm from, making music like I'm making. The reason why? I imagine I've just outlined it.

I love the guy, he's one of my favorites, and honestly I didn't expect to feel that way and didn't at first so I get it. Yeah, completely agree. I should like it, it has all the ingredients I usually look for in music and he's a talented chap, but something just doesn't gel with me and his music. I got Ambivalence Avenue when it came out, listened to it a few times and never went back to it for some reason. I dug it out again yesterday for the first time in years and still meh. Can't pin point it, not sure if it's something about his melodies or production or what? Just leaves me a bit empty.

I totally get it. I'm that way about autechre. I can appreciate their sound design but I can't feel it. It just ends up being like mental masturbation for me although I recognize how much they are pulling out of their equipment. I'm amazed by what they do but don't care for it much. I feel completely different about aphex twin. Him I feel.

I have on/off days with autechre. The occasional track will blow my mind, usually the more melodic stuff but mostly I feel the same way as you do about them. Exai was a bit hit and miss, nothing really stood out on the album bar a couple of tracks amongst the 2hrs of music.
Aphex on the other hand. There's not a lot of his stuff I don't like, no matter what style of track he puts out, there's always something that amazes me in it, technically and musically. His melodies are just incredible. So yeah, I feel him to.

yeah it's the same way for me. some of autechre's melodies are good you are right. but aphex twin whether writing something beautiful or utterly mad is just engaging even when I don't like it objectively. that said reggae. I'm at a restaurant that is playing it and it just drives me bonkers.

Oh and: Beck. No specific complaints, I just don't understand what's supposed to be so good about this. Also BoC's remix of the Beck song is one of my least favorite remixes by them while it's considered to be one of the best by many. I guess Beck and I just weren't made for each other

Death metal or black metal with growls and shrieks. I can happily listen to them if the growls and shrieks are incorporated as another instrument into the overall atmospheric sound, mixed parallel to other instruments and kind of buried, but with growling and shrieking all over the place I just cannot help but consider them a little bit comic.
