*couple month necro*
We should organise a compilation of this sort of stuff.
I don't think I'd include a lot of the stuff I posted a couple months ago, because hip hop beats paired with "ethereal" was actually starting to be p prominent before BoC, and that's not all they do or really what makes them special either. I'll listen back to all these once I'm outta school and find more tracks like them, BoC are a pretty unique band so who their predecessors/influences are is of great interest to me.
So let's say this becomes a thing:
What would our cutoff for pre-BoC be? 1995? 1996? 1997? Maybe as late as 1998 since that's when they were really shown to the world outside underground ambient-techno enthusiasts?
Would we include stuff they've sampled or covered as well? Like "Celebrate" or the video game music they sampled on Iraq Says or even stuff like Can ("Opening the Mouth") and ISB (a bunch of stuff)?
Is anyone even interested slightly?

This is a good one too. 3:38 onwards is INCREDIBLY BoC-like.solar_bleaching wrote:-Brian Eno - Lizard Point.
Quite a bit like ROYGBIV.Nall wrote:This little TV tune
The resemblance to A06 here is actually pretty uncanny... With maybe a bit of Zander Two.Keeoaddi wrote:monoton - ein wort
This is an excellent choice and also a really obvious influence on Boards.ch35 wrote:My Bloody Valentine - Instrumental 2
*The amazing thing about MBV tracks like that is it's just minimal bass, reverbed guitar and a drum machine*
I still can't fathom how this is Lou Barlow and not actually BoC.rainier wrote:raise the bells by folk implosion.

I know! It reminds me a little of Grouper too. I wonder how much influence John Davis had at the time, they were making some pretty weird shit when they were working together, I wish they'd made more like that though, but I love all the stuff they did for the Kids soundtrack.I still can't fathom how this is Lou Barlow and not actually BoC
I guess Lou Barlow must be a pain in the ass to work with, no one sticks around for long. Still, love that dude.
All of old. Nothing else ever. Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

could be "Track 0" on Geogaddi.
I'll remember this, after school. Her music is very BoCish.
Also you guys should subscribe to Retrontario and Retrowinnipeg on YouTube! Tons of BoCish tourism spots and adverts for VHS and Tapedecks. As well as, of course, kid's shows.

Re: BoC before BoC
I was looking for some stuff by Michael Brook and came across this on youtube -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6bUc0TxmZ0
The video description reads -
"I'm viewing this album from a Boards of Canada fan perspective. Its probably the most similar thing to BoC that I ever heard, and I'm finding really hard to believe its from 1985. Anyway, amazing stuff on this album, especially for us BoC fans."
Not sure I agree that it's particularly like BOC, but interesting nonetheless. Perhaps it was posted by someone on here?

Re: BoC before BoC
Nothing in a general sense. Would have to be more specific. Stuff like XYZ is clearly reminiscent of multiple artists on Warp before BoC. Their signature sounds I had never heard truly before hearing them. Their method of using samplers is legitimately one of a kind and I would love to see just all that the process entails.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Re: BoC before BoC
I wish I could find the old ONF documentaries with BOC style soundtracks, the films from the seventies. That would be totally cool! But most of my search were unsuccessful...
Re: BoC before BoC
I had no idea any of these existed. Binge listening later, aye
