I've been obsessed with punk music lately.... we should get a thread going naming some good punk bands we wanna share around.

I'll start with an obvious one: Fugazi. They're great.

Fugazi are easily a top 5 band for me.

Um... Minor Threat, The Gun Club, Minutemen, Refused, Descendants, Husker Du

They did both, and more. Aglio E Olio was 95, after Licensed To Ill, Pauls Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication.

I'm a huge fugazi fan. Punk is pretty much what I cut my teeth on, not just the music, but diy and anarchism and all that, the whole shebang. Black flag, minor threat, crass etc, but I was really involved in riot grrrl and queercore, like bikini kill, buggy bear, bratmobile, team dresch, heavens to betsy, sleater kinney etc...long shot here, but did anyone else grow up in that scene? It was such a huge part of my life, making zines, trading tapes, wheatpasting, protests.... I know people all over the world through that scene, it's kind of amazing how it happened.

Anyway, team dresch was the shit. They never fit into any one box, but their album 'personal best' is one of the best punk albums of that era hands down

Major Fugazi addict here myself. Actually use to keep in touch with Guy (nothing serious) when my band was at it's highest peaks. Great guys.

Huggy Bear is another absolute essential- all of it. Weaponry Listens to Love is still a frequent retreat.

Others: Germs, Dead Kennedy's, Flipper, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Bikini Kill, the Weirdos, old Wire, Crass, the list goes on and on.

Bad ass! DIY or die!

It was kind of cool that when I moved to Olympia I got to meet a lot of the musicians and zine writers and artists I sort if hero worshipped as a kid, and it was interesting to meet them as an adult and see that they were just regular people like myself, that's the great thing about DIY culture. If you want to do or make something, you just go for it, and anyone can do it.

I worked at homo a go go one year and Tobi Vail from bikini kill shared her popcorn with me when i was doing door and I was like "!!!". Like, 99% of the world has no idea who that is, but in my head I was like "omg yr zine changed my life when I was 13!". The Oly library also has a pretty cool zine archive too.

Yeah, I agree, it is interesting when you meet people as an adult that you hero worshipped as a youngster. It's like, oh, hey, what's up, vs. omg, omg, omg. or something like that. It was cool chatting with Fugazi back in the day and helping Blonde Redhead take down their drum set and pack their equipment up (this was way back around 1999). I like these experiences where you can hang and talk like normal people.

Although, when I was 15 or 16, I got a guitar pick from Justin in Unwound and thought it was the coolest thing ever (I got it from the stage after a show). Now, I'd be like, I'm throwing this away, it's too thin lol. Actually, I'd just put it in a memory box somewhere under the bed. Come to think of it, I think I lost it. I'll have to check the memory box.

That's cool you got to share popcorn with TV. Sounds like a fun time!

Miinutemen are great btw. Also if you guys are looking for new punk bands, there's this band Grass is Green based in Boston who are very very unique. They're definitely influenced from early on D.C. punk bands. Definitely give em a listen, I'm sure some of you would really appreciate their tunes.

I'll add to the Fugazi love here. I've only discovered them recently, but I really like their music, and Ian seems like a really nice, down-to-earth, intelligent person. Plus, the straight-edge punk/hardcore scene seems to be an extremely positive environment, which I appreciate.

yeah!!
i'm not knee deep but i hang around the punk scene here in olympia. there are still some really great bands here. hysterics is one of my favorites right now -- powerful/feminist/all-woman hardcore band. broken water is also really good, but are more of a shoegazey mbv/sonic youth thing than straight up Punk. justin from unwound has started a new band called survival knife who are definitely worth checking out if you like unwound

hoax is from like maryland or something and they are like, dudes playing super loud hardcore but if they come thru your town SEE THEM. one of the bonkersest shows i've been to.
