VSTs with BoC patches
Since nothing else is going on, and we all love to find their sounds just because it's fun to sit in your room and pretend you happened upon the sound by accident and suddenly created one of BoCs hits and they're version is actually a plagiarism of your work, I thought I'd see if anyone has encountered BoC patches in VSTs, or even ones you made yourself. And by this I mean sounds that sound close to something from a particular song, not just BoC-ish sounds in general.
So far I've only got this:
Minimoog V / CE_SoftPad1 - This one sounds almost like the beginning synth from Kiteracer 2. It can also be used for the opening synth of Sixtyniner.
I think I've heard others but it's been a bit, think Abakos had a couple Geogaddi-sounding ones in there somewhere. I remember I made a couple patches through Minimoog V that was somewhat close to one of 5.9.78's synths, plus one from King of Carnival. Too bad I don't have them on hand.
Post what you got, or bash this for not being original.

Most likely BoC do not use VSTs much, it at all. And even more likely, they don't use patches or presets. I would imagine that they're happy spending an hour or 8 finding the right parameters on hardware samplers / synths, starting from scratch with their own instruments or sounds. They've stated in interviews that they don't like using software effects or instruments... And it's kind of self-evident that they almost always don't plug-and-play straight to the final cut.
In so many interviews they have stated that they sample guitars, pianos, and other destroyed instruments / sounds, apparently mostly from thrift and resale stores or other obscure locations.
If you want to make sounds like BoC, instead of attempting to emulate their sounds via VST patches, personally I think it would be more useful to learn to sample your own sounds and process them in order to create one-of-a-kind instruments. Experiment with recording techniques. Save money and buy hi-fi amps, compressors, EQs, filters, and reverbs / delays. Learn about LFOs. Learn about vocoders. Don't emulate BoC directly; rather, inject the BoC technique and philosophy into your own creative process.
My 2 cents

A lot can be learnt from presets in software, they're a good starting point if you're trying to better understand the parameters involved in a particular sound and even what each parameters function is within a particular VST/AU, if you know what each knob, switch and dial does in software then it can be applied to its equivalent hardware!
One of the plug-ins I use that has some BOC style presets is the Novation bass station (theres a lot of patches which can produce a real warm and traditional synth bass, and with a little tweaking on a couple of presets I've got sounds similar to the bass on ROYGBIV and the older twoism sounds)
Another good plug-in in general is Native Instruments Absynth 5, this actually has a patch called beautiful place if I remember right, although as I say the patches are but good starting point for finding and crafting the sounds you want![/b]

It somewhat feels like the original point of this post was lost. I'm sure BoC don't use VSTs, I'm merely saying, if anyone knows patches in VST synths that sound close to something from one of their songs, let us know. You know, just for fun. I'm not trying to emulate their style or trying to use this for my own music creation.
Everything you guys are saying makes sense and it's something anyone making music hoping to sound like BoC should take to heart though, I agree. I broke out of my "gotta try to make music just like BoC and Aphex" phase some time ago so I know what that path is like. Think a lot of us have been there.
Hopefully that clears things up =p

In b4 post about trying to sound like boc is stupid and/or impossible.
Fm7 by native industry is pretty good for complex synths, though really you can do it with any vst or ANYTHING really.
I made this with an adlib general midi soundfont and a simple offset delay on accident last night. Tell me it doesn't sound like an old tunes version of constants are changing.

I think it would in theory be possible to make something like gyroscope using nothing but Flstudio's Wasp, though I still think you're better off learning your own tricks.

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.”Cupz wrote:In b4 post about trying to sound like boc is stupid and/or impossible.

Reaktor has some user made synths with BOC type sounds however I find this closer, covered in this link. Some get some close sounding stuff out of malestrom in reason as well.

well are you thinking free? because reaktor and TAL are both AU and VST. I have very few synths that don't cross over between both platforms. Also Logic has that great tape delay plug in which can have settings that add a lot of wow and flutter to the source sound. I find the plug ins on reaktor a bit more like BOC in the tape delay settings but its workable.
Its really about the wow and flutter and a dash of LFO.
Also I cannot overstate Omnisphere. Pretty much has the greatest sound sources of any synth ever.

use samplers. you'll get better results. get some classic emulations and/or synths theyve said they own/synths theyre rumoured to own and chuck them into a sampler, mash, blend, layer, resample.
go wild but be calculated in your decisions. I've been making music for years but i still learn something new with sound design every time i make music.
bocs sounds arnt really that out there and impossible to make. the reason people cant do it is because they dont have the same gear, the same cables and the same room. Nothing wrong with trying though.
Reverse engineering is a great skill to have.
if your looking for some sounds similar to TH, play with some FM synthesis. good luck, post your results, would be keen to hear

Since this is Twoism and not elsewhere I'll spare you the direct two word expletive answer to your OP that I would have likely said somewhere else and instead re-direct my anger - fuck VSTs. At the very least, the ones that try to imitate BoC.VSTs with BoC patches
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
