^ this. 2013 has been a vintage year for music. Isn't it weird how some years are so good and others less so. I've been more fired up by music *generally* this year (new and old) than any for a long time - and especially with new music.

Currently in another city and I left my Sennheisers at home, so now I'm crying. People seem to be divided with this release as far as I'm reading on Reddit so my curiosity in on the roof. Don't want to listen to it yet, but I am playing Hinders on awfully crappy speakers and it's quite gorgeous, I can't wait to listen the whole thing in detail. What are your thoughts so far?

First impressions:

Hiders: - Not feeling this one so much. Seems to be drawing from a different style/source of samples to usual, but still using his trademarks in treatment of sounds plus a few new tricks, which is good, but don't really like the vibe. Sounds like probably his most commercial and American sounding production to date. Can't stand that beat that starts at 2:30ish especially the really 80s style tom/snare roll bits (gated reverb is it? Phil Collins/Eastenders theme anyone?). Best bit is the last section from 3:18 onwards imo. Sounds like a nice vignette in itself. Class.

Come Down To Us: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1bb2JakOmo& Classic Burial, nice addition with the Indian sounding strings from 2:18. Seems a bit slower than most his previous stuff. Nice speech samples.

Rival Dealer: Beat sounds like Prodigy Experience era breaks. Really ravey vibes. 5:30 onwards surprised me. Takes on a really Hardcore (you know the score) kinda energy.

Overall: Probably a grower like most of his stuff, but I think it's gonna be hard to top his Truant/Rough Sleeper release from last year tbf.

Come Down to Us and Hiders are...I almost don't want to type this, but they're very pop sounding. I wasn't understanding the two songs until the last bits of Come Down To Us where it all clicked and then I understood the track and liked that the track title after that one is Hiders and follows the lead of the previous track. I'm extremely appreciative of these two tracks on this release, despite their difficulty.

holy crap this record is i dunno
aside from the title it sounds like a john hughes soundtrack????? and i..... i dunno, in this context i'm not sure how i feel about it. i mean, despite how corny is gets i still love it
but the subject matter is totally unexpected for me and amazing and if this is a coming out letter OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE BURIAL

Well, I'm not feeling the digital bells that punctuate the second half of Come Down To Us… but otherwise I far prefer this to Truant/Rough Sleeper. He'll have to go some to beat the Street Halo and Kindred Eps for me though.

Rival Dealer is the worst track on this EP, and it's still fantastic. Hiders is brilliant, and Come Down to Me is one of the best things, if not the best thing Burial has ever done.

Disavowed, I don't think he's trying to say he's trans, but I just think he's very much showing his support, and saying that people should do what they think is right.

For example, releasing an incredibly divisive EP.

Ok so I've heard this (via my laptop speakers unfortunately) and I thought this was going to be one of these releases which everyone hates but I kind of like. To be perfectly honest I didn't find the EP all that compelling, and in fact for a moment I considered the possibility that it's a troll EP. I will of course have to give it a proper listen, but some of the stuff I was hearing sounded like a parody of Burial's music, not to mention the cover art that looks awful (that noise filter is pretty crappy and even though I want to think the inner parts of the letters were left unedited on purpose, I think it just looks terrible).

I don't know what to think, I'm waiting for some good headphones to give it a spin but so far it seems to be the first Burial release to have ever disappointed me.

Well - I'll give the EP this: I can't remember the last time I alt-tabbed over to some music I was playing because I was annoyed/pissed off. He's getting a reaction to be sure - and that's better than boredom or indifference.

I'm not gay or transgender - so I figure a lot of the sentiment is probably lost on me. That's my problem - not his - but I feel like the EP is often skating this thin line between being moving and being intolerably corny.

Track #3 may be a grower - but to be honest if I didn't already love Burial I would have dismissed him had this been my first exposure.

Had another listen to the EP today, fresh ears n all that. The first few mins of Come Down To Us is alright but then it starts to sound like a bloody Akon record, Hiders is really annoying me and Rival Dealer is just okay.
Burial has always had elements of the cheesier side of 'dance music' in his tracks, but they seem to dominate the music this in this release imo.
This is the first Burial release I'm in two minds whether to order the vinyl of or not. Part of me needs it so I don't have any gaps in my collection, but in all fairness I can't see myself ever listening to it.

Disappointed to say the least.
