If you listen to any form of modern [meaning average,similar] idm, it was and is inspired by Autechre and very few others. Granular synthesis, droned out Nord synths, intense compression, dsp cleanliness to the point of mind melting confusion. Common are the spastic, intricately, sterilized metallic/pseudo-acoustic forms of audio that intoxicate the listener, leaving them wondering 'how do they do that?'. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of bedroom musicians that aspire to grasp the ability to manipulate sound as Autechre does. And AE keeps ahead of their own 'scene' in such a way that a lot of their older listeners lose grasp or just don't get any of the new ideas involved in AE's newer albums. Funny, but that does justify the term'Intelligent Dance Music'. Some people just wan't the same sound like they are use to, to adhere to their own expectations. Autechre is one of the few groups who re-invent their sound with great care without consideration for the trendy listener. Techno music, in the beginning, was first made for dance floors. Autechre makes techno for the dancing within your own mind, regardless of wether there is a dancefloor present.

This is exactly what happened to me. I got Draft 7.30 and HATED it. I didn't see in that album what everyone was raving about when speaking of Autechre. It was aimless and had no melodic qualitites to it at all, which I need in music for me to like it. I'm glad this thread exists, b/c I'm going to give them another chance with a few of the other albums everyone is mentioning.

And what is the official pronunciation of Autechre? I use Aww-ti-kerr.

It's "au tekker"

Autechre stands for Audio Technical Research.

try looking at their music as a tottaly different from anything. the whole concept is taken from a technical side. means of instrument usage and that stuff. dunno, i also didn't like them 10 years ago. maybe because i was listening to hardcore back then.
