Tomorrow's Harvest vinyl surface noise?

I had purchased Tomorrow's Harvest on vinyl when it was released, and then ordered the other represses as well. I had played TH a few times, but never gave it a hard, concentrated listen. Obviously the represses have their own issues, but some of them sound outstanding besides one song or one side (such as Geogaddi). After going back to TH, it sounds very noisy compared to these. Lots of little clicks and instances of static.

Yeah, I know that's the way vinyl is, so some is to be expected. But after near silence on Geogaddi and side A of IABP, the amount of surface noise on TH seems unacceptable for a new record. Did I get unlucky, or does your copy have a bit of surface noise as well?

Interesting. I downloaded a FLAC copy of the vinyl rip on what.cd for comparison, and it was eerily quiet compared to mine. Maybe some copies were defective? Luckily I purchased through Bleep, and they're sending me a brand new sealed LP. I'm eager to compare the two copies.

Please let us know what the outcome is. My vinyl copies are still all wrapped up in plastic as I haven't yet found a space for my records players in my new diggs, so no chance to listen from vinyl just yet. Would like to know if there's a possibility there are some heavily decayed vinyls out there so I can check and try to get a replacement if needs be. It would be a shame not to possess the vinyl in the incarnation it was intended by the artist.

Mine has a fair amount of surface noise, nothing too bad though. I pre-ordered from Bleep if it matters.

I still have a sealed copy which might sound better but I'm cool with it as it is. Such is the way of the vinyl.

It's always worth thinking about the equipment that you're playing the record through, as this will obviously have an effect on how it sounds. If you can, try adjusting your tracking weight and anti-skate weight. Make sure the record is clean too.

With all of that said, the cardboard inner sleeves that TH was issued in aren't particularly great for storing records. Occasionally you'll get residue from the plant which can also affect playback of the record.

I have slight surface noise on mine - but this is because I played it on a low quality, cheap turntable that was tracking at a high weight, and I'm now using a much better turntable and cartridge. It's all worth thinking about!
