Is there a future for electronic music as we know it today?

glitch has no future in its current form.

it's turning into the electronic version of prog rock.

Wouldn't you say TCH is a new direction for electronic music? Acoustic guitars, unique arrangements... I've heard guitars in electronic music before (Zero 7, etc), but nothing like this.

There's nothing new or unique about a combination between electronics and guitar!

Yer probably right. I've just never heard it done like this last album.

Maybe I could propose a broader question here, is there a future in music as we know it today?

Lovely topic!

I think we've reached a certain kind of "innovative" level.

There will always be new directions in electronic music but I'm convinced that the development which electronic music went through in the last couple of decades will never be the same again.

Ok, we might find a few new directions to take and we will find beautiful combinations, but a total refreshing musical era will never happen again imo

I can't look in the future but for me it's pretty obvious that we reached a certain point where we can "see" what's ahead of us.

So, the answer to your question is no (the electronic revolution is as we speak... )

people have too much to choose from, and that creates a danger, a danger that music may eventually lose its novelty. i suppose the only
thing left to do would be to take music 'outside' of music and place it somewhere else, shift its axis. open new doors, but close them behind you.
i know that sounds very general but its a subject thats difficult to articulate. its what i think anyway.

I would think the BoC movies played during their shows was creating a different dimension for electronic music, but light shows and movies are nothing new (I think they were inovated by the Velvet Underground and Warhol). So I wonder what could be a new dimension for music... it's really a 1-dimensional medium.

What about live electronic improv, or a "jam band" that plays electronica off the cuff? I haven't heard of that before (I suppose old school DJ's used to do that all the time?).

Unfortunately they are a live band only... I saw them a few years ago and was absolutely stunned by their performance.
I do hope they will go into the studio only once to produce a high quality album. It'll probably never happen though.

This guy played at a night I do live sound engineering for and I was in stitches all night but at the same time really impressed. He basically plays a load of old toys that make noises. Hes stuck jack sockets on them so he can get audio out from the devices. He plays toys like, kids guitars, Simon, speaking spell and educational toys. You name it, he plays it. His live set up consists of a mixer, sampler and drum machine which he fires off etc etc while he sings and plays these toys. Its funny but hes got it down to a tee!!! A lot of it actually sounds quite Daft Punk esc. He had the crowd rocking, and its like hes doing air guitar.
Maybe not quite what your looking for in terms of an answer to electronic mucic in the future but hey, hes unique. Thought id mention him!

Here here! Agreed heartily.

Although on the whole I think electronic music has a long, long way to go. I know I'm often finding new ideas in stuff I hear, and if I don't, I just have to start fruityloops or whatever and press a few buttons, and hey presto.
