I've wondered this myself.. like if we would have anywhere near as many people exercising these kinds of sounds, or if this would be as fresh as it was back then.

There are SO many qualities about this that are timeless. I think a few of these tracks have a strong influence from early hip hop, but that's really the only way I think it could be dated in any way. At the same time, the way technology is nowadays, people make all kinds of crazy edits and samples no sweat. They would still be unique as to the amount of analog work, but I feel like there would be a bit less of a wow factor from people not realizing the amount of work that went into these sounds. Or maybe not? heck I don't know haha.

There's plenty of music out there that's similar enough, but I still think this album is just as fresh today as it was when it was released. If it was dated, their aesthetic would be viral and unavoidable. But it's still here in it's little corner, waiting to show you and not demanding attention. Plus there are so many little things on this record (as well as their other records) that contribute as opposed to just one idea being rehashed. The seagulls on Happy Cycling and their "Doppler" effect, the phasing of Telephasic and even the timelessness of a track like Roygbiv, which ironically represents a very specific era. Great music like this is always fresh.

dont feel bad. i speak fluent english and have come to the conclusion that the place that BOC's music takes all of us to, is ineffable. its completely impossible to put into words.

anyway.

i feel as though if music has the right to children was released today. it wouldnt be as ahead of its time. i understand what you mean though, the beauty of being able to hear it fresh again would be nice.

Well, I would rather have the acoustic version of MHTRTC to be released.

I'm trying to put into perspective how different music would be without MHARTC until 2014, or any Warp Records artist for that matter and it's completely unfathomable, making it impossible for me to answer this question.

I think that MHARTC was released in exactly the right timestamp that it was supposed to be released. The influential planets lined up for that one. I can imagine how much I would lose my shit in a post MHARTC if Geogaddi was released in 2014 or how chilled my sunshine filled drives would be to IABPOITC in 2014, but MHARTC has a very distinct purpose for the time in Electronic music that it was born into. I can't rearrange that one. To dramatize this, it feels almost sacrilege to take that record out of 1998.

Music for Airports was needed in 1978.
Computer World was needed in 1981.
Selected Ambient Works Volume 1 was needed in 1992.
MHARTC was needed in 1998.
So on and so forth.

The amount of progression in music that these records and more like them have caused because of their staple in their respective time periods are astonishing. It'd be like if The Beatles never existed until 2014. How would MUSIC be?
