I know. They have audio recording in 6, external MIDI seems like a no-brainer. They should have a module in the rack that controls external gear, with CC and sysex messages as well. It would be cool if it acted as a sysex library as well to save patches in a project file.

Hmm that is interesting. I have fm8 (I tended to like fm7 better but it was one of those things that didn't have support on intel mac) anyway I haven't thought they sounded much like each other when I compare fm8 to dX7 patches. I could see there is definitely cross over though.

Its funny bibio has just started using one and you can hear it all over his recent releases.. all bells and brass and funk and such. :lol:

I swore I would never entertain that synth because I hated most of the music that was done on it in the mid 80's. I just recently noticed that Bronski Beat used it as the main synth line in Small Town Boy.

Just download classic DX7 sysex patches. That's all you need to sound classic. Everyone used presets in the 80's so it's pretty much the only way to sound classic. Here are some of the best collections:

Thanks I got the DX7 FDII w grey matter.. part of me really wanted the old school original but I got this on a trade so not complaining anyway I don't think FM8 really captures what this thing sounds like. Its like its trying and gets the idea right but it isn't the same when I play them together. There is a lot more fluctuation in the dx7.

And nice rig 747. I wish I could get down with making music on a pc. So many great programs for it really.. (not trying to be flame warish at all)

Ok I am thinking this thread is the most related to my question so here goes.

I am still using ProTools although I am starting to hate all the startup bugs and upgrade bullshit I have been dealing with. Anyway, until I decide to ditch it, and until I get an actual analogue synth (I am thinking a Roland SH-101), I would like to check out some virtual instrument plugins for ProTools.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an analogue synth VI plugin that can emulate something like the Roland SH-101? I was hoping I could use LuSH-101 but that's VST or whatever and does not work with ProTools as far as I can tell.

I am not really knowledgeable about all this stuff so please forgive my ignorance.

Until you can get something else (If that is what you want since protools is great for audio manipulation) I'd suggest reaper as a workaround for now there are tutorials if you want to still record in pt but reaper is free basically. I'm an Ableton user and occasionally dabbled in logic and reason. Lush 101 sounds good but is killing my quad core CPU. I find I'm using tal's version more. I also have the real 101 these are nice approximations. I can answer more thoroughly when I get home.

I might stick with ProTools if I can get past the upgrade bullshit and actually focus on producung some stuff. Its what I know so I kind of don't want to start all over with new software. The I/O stuff is pretty confusing but it also looks like that ReWire plugin is good for simplifying that.

Looks like I can use Reaper in ProTools and use VST plugins through that. Interesting!

I guess another reason to switch is that my Digi 002 hardware from Avid is not supported in ProTools 11 so when I want to upgrade I have to get a different rig. :-(

I like to know more about what folks thing of Logic as compared to ProTools. I suppose if Logic is good enough for BoC then its good enough for me...

There is no doubt for audio tweaking protools is a great program. I left it rather immediately because I was stuck with an interface I didn't want (mbox). I moved over to Ableton at that time way back at version 4.

The rewire is a bit cumbersome but it will be a workaround until you spend other money on a different interface or make another decision. Frankly most people I know work in two DAWs merely because its pretty hard to find one that does it all. I also tend to think if you know something inside and out its useful to stay with it. I just clicked with Ableton so I stayed with it.

Also I'm on logic 9 I don't have the new 10 since I'm on 10.7 still. The new version features some interesting synths and drum program that seem very cool. But overall I find logic convoluted to work in. There is no doubt its full featured but I don't enjoy it. I have enough vst and hardware to make the plugs not important to me so I'm going to spend instead on Ableton 9 with max and push which is a spendy upgrade.

Ok I have the requisite cat so I am sorted there. Now I just need a nice analogue synth. I think I just want one that I learn inside and out...for now.

So which one to get? I am kind of fixated on the Roland Juno 6. It seems like it slices and dices and all that.

I am also considering a Minimoog or the Phatty. I like the idea of getting a new analogue synth since it will...ya know...be new. That being said, a refurbished Juno 6 could be very cool too.

I don't exactly want to sound like Boeards of Canada but...you know...I want to sound exactly like Boards of Canada. :-)

Seriously though, if I could figure out how to reproduce some of their sounds I figure I am learning how to properly use a synth and experiment a lot which is the ultimate goal here.

The Yamaha CS-70M also seems amazing but I have no idea how much one would cost yet.

Advice?

The Juno 6 is a sweet synth. I'd get it, it almost always sounds good. I have the 60 and they are the same except for preset storage. The cs70 is not a common synth and it's spendy. Not as bad as the 80 but keep an eye out you might get lucky. Look it's hard to beat the merits of a minimoog D. It's awesome. Just fat juicy buzzy thick but certainly check out the phatty and sub phatty. The voyager is rather dark and smooth sounding. I have one, I like it but I'm a bit partial to the sub myself. I wouldn't overlook the bass station 2 either. It's a great bargain, knobs per feature, preset storage (which is nice and you won't have with the 6). The Bs2 also has a bit of Roland sh101 in it's filter.

Ya know what, I meant the Jupiter 6, not the Juno 6. The Jup 6 seems to fetch way more on EBay. I take thats better than the Juno then?

Time to start selling my Japanese mini-LPs! I hope people still buy those...

The Jupiter 6 is a very capable synth. I had one I sold it and kept the 60. The 60 bears a closer sound to the Jupiter 8 but is far less flexible. I preferred the sound of the 60 and MKS-80 rev 4 over the 6. But that is only my opinion. I've been very lucky to be able to try many synths. But I haven't been able to try the Jupiter 8 Elka synthex Obxa or prophet 5 in person which are probably my favorites of all time. Any of the jupiters are awesome though. I just prefer the 4 and 8. Horses for courses though it comes down always to preference.

Personally I'm also really looking forward to the korg reissue of the arp odyssey. Very cool synth and duo phonic. The pulse 2 is also worth looking at sounds great and is paraphonic analog. Honestly I'd take any of these reissues over the dave smith stuff. I don't like the Curtis chip sound. I've played the mopho x4 the P12 (hell for that price I'm almost at prophet 5 and I'd way rather have that) the poly and mono evolver (I have the evo keyboard sounds great build is iffy hate the encoders) but honestly the mutable instruments shruthi is very close in sound to the mono evolver. Another synth hardly anyone considers but I think is one of the best synths right now is the accelerator by radikal technologies. The build is fantastic the effects are great and has audio in to run other stuff through it. Its Very flexible and sounds outstanding. If I were going to purchase a modern digital synth I'd take this one over any of the others.
