Well I know that that is an opinion of one person, but this person sounds more like a very casual listener and not someone who took the time to realize the depth of the music. What sounds so simple and childlike at times hides so many aural layers that many of us have spent the better half of 10 years trying to dig through them.

That review has been up there for a long time, as evidenced by the 1999 publication date.

If you look on that site, you'll see he's actually done quite a lot of reviews. Apparently he is alsa a well-known Italian poet, aside from a popular music critic. As always, Wikipedia has more.

Personally, I think it's rubbish. His comments on the pre-Twoism works are so vague as to be meaningless. What have we learned from this? Their early works were often ambient and electronic. The later ones were more mature than the earlier. Oh, and they were creative.

There's really nothing there you couldn't make up from the published track titles and lengths. What's more, it seems to contradict other sources, which point to the earlier Boards of Canada of having a more convention structure before gradually moving into the electronic realm; take the sample of Duffy for example.

The problem with their first full-length album, Music Has The Right To Children (Warp, 1998), is that it is too obviously inspired by their mentors Autechre.

i can hear little traces of an ae influence in musc has the right, just transplanted to a much warmer environment sonically.

Yeah around the time MHTRTC came out, and occassionaly since, I've heard reviewers compare BoC to Ae, usually saying their sound is derivative. I don't hear it at all, or rather, they are about as similar as Aphex and BoC, so the comparison is really a pointless one.

Agreed. And I would even say that "Basefree" reminds me more of Aphex than AE. But I can see why an inexperienced listener would make that mistake. I remember getting corrected on this board about that very issue when I first got into Autechre, but now I could spot the difference between AE and BoC from a million miles away.

WTF? How is Pete anything like Telephasic? For the record, "Pete Standing Alone" was the first track that got my attention with BoC.

It does seem like a lazy, off-the-cuff review. But I've become very suspicious of critical reviews lately, partly because both "The Life Aquatic" and "The Campfire Headphase" received lukewarm reviews and both of those are favorities of mine.

Screw the critics.
