I don't normally give a shit about sports but all the shit talking from people I know make me happy to be a German-American today, even if the family name is goddamn Schuster and that's pretty dumb sounding. My one time exception to cheering based on nationality or ancestry is today - there's about 6 or 7 people who can suck a fat one today and learn to be a good sport next time. Thoroughly deserved for Germany. Best team by far and for those saying Messi wasn't best player of the tournament... perhaps that is right, but he is the reason Argentina got to the final in the first place.

Yeah Bastian was beaten about pretty bad, but he did his fair share of play acting which lessened my respect for him. Still what a player.

To be honest, for all they went on about Aguero's elbow, Neuer was lucky to stay on the pitch too. I thought he was trying to re-enact Harold Schumacher's assault on Patrick Battiston in 1982. Thomas Muller is the epitome of everything that made me hate the German team as a kid. Petulant, arrogant, cheating (he doesn't so much dive as go off like a car alarm if anyone farts within 3 miles of him), and yet supremely gifted. Seriously, all Muller needs is a tight pair of 80's shorts and a porn-star mustache and he'd slot right into their side circa 1990.

However, it has to be said, Bastian Schweinsteiger went down in legend last night. What a name by the way! Sounds like a Gestapo officer from a Sam Peckinpah movie - the scar he picked up below the eye only helped him achieve this goal. You just know he sports a monocle, leather trenchcoat and cane when he's not playing. That man wasn't born to human parents. He was hewn from a slab of granite.

Can someone explain to me how in the world Messi was the player of the tournament? How does the Mafifa choose the player? I know he had good statistics but it's about players who stand out the most like Rodriguez or Robben.

He didn't deserve it, but no one is noting that he virtually carried them to the final. If he had scored and won the final (I know a big feat) or even just won the tournament, people would be speaking about this completely differently.

On balance there were a crop of great players deserving of the award but I don't think anyone is head and shoulders above anyone else in that elite group. If I had to choose, probably Muller of James Rodriguez.

Cup Fever's here again, and although I ain't the biggest footy fan, It's the first England match today and I'm going to make it.

Talking about England, even as a Frenchman (a lucky one ), I would have wished that, if not for France and Germany (my two favorite teams), they could have won this World Cup. I mean, yeah, France had to wait 20 years to get another World Cup (especially after being so close in 2006), but England had never won it since 56 fucking years, and they'll have to wait another 4 years without being sure of what 2026 will bring.

I will obviously be for my country Sunday, but I can confess that it could be a wonderful day for Argentina and that I will be happy for them, even if i don't like Messi that much.

As a Dutchie, this World Cup has been hard to swallow to be fair.

So many dubious decisions everywhere. The France - Morocco match, the Moroccan striker got a yellow when it clearly should have been a penalty. In the Argentina - The Netherlands match messi not getting a yellow for a very clear handsball, can't even get it more clear. The argentinian player with that harsh tackle, and then shooting the ball at the dutch bench, obviously a red card. The Netherlands weren't playing well/nice either ofcourse, but still.

Ofcourse mistakes are made when refereeing, but apart from those examples there have been so many where VAR didn't intervene when they had to. It feels like I've never seen a worldcup which has seen so much refereeing mistakes, especially now VAR is here.

I'm not 1 for conspiracy theories, but it sure seems like a Messi/Mbappe final was liked by a lot of Qatari. /end rant.

I don't ever follow football (or any sport for that matter) but I'm _so_ stoked for the Sunday match. The previous match against Croatia ended up on a huge, indescribable party in every single street across the whole country, and even that will pale in comparison if we win the World Cup. It's not something that interest me in particular but it's undeniable that it does represent joy to the great majority of people here, it's actually very emotional to see it first hand. GO ARGENTINA LA PUTA MADRE!
