Flying Lotus - You're Dead

Post by Mindshifter »

Anyone heard the new album?
It's just sinking in with me. Heavy jazz influences. A lack of "proper" songs. Extremely dynamic. Don't know what to think of it yet though.
What are you thoughts?

This just in: Flylo just aint cool anymore.

Joke obviously. I just dont get what makes it an electronic album. Did he just hire a bunch of instrumentalists and recorded what they where doing? If so then besides the mastering I don't hear anything flylo would have done himself, and I'm pretty sure Warp does the mastering.

Track 2 seemed nice but how the drums are sampled/resampled is just wack

btw (un)fortunately I didn't see that Warp published the album before I wrote the above review...

lol I like it

I think it's close to on par with Cosmogramma in that it's all over the place, and pretty unique (IMO). In comparison to say, the last album, which I thought, while decent, was pretty bland and typical. I like how organic this one sounds in places.

Also, he actually makes Kendrick Lamar, who I'm not really a fan of, sound pretty fucking awesome.

I prefer it over his other works. Loving the short tracks as well. Not sure what else to say yet, need to listen to it more.
Solid stuff, nothing mind-blowing though.

the first half is definitely better than the second half. but overall the album doesnt sound cohesive at all and it just sounds like his "ideas+drafts+loops" mixtape/thing.

The concept for this album is so strong. YOU'RE DEAD! I was really struck by the title and artwork.

I saw this in the Aphex thread too.

I'm still not sure if you're so happy you cry because you can't handle it and walk away, or if you're so disappointed that your sorrow can only be expressed with a single tear and you walk away towards better things and try to forgot how FlyLo let you down.

Yeah I have not really been liking it all too much. i was like that with the last few. I think I just moved away from flylo and have been listening to other things that have been tickling my ears more I guess.

No harm done, it was a peaceful breakup. We said we may still be friends but you know how that goes most of the time. We weren't really that into each other anyway.

Haha.

I was wondering the same exact thing at my first listen like-- Wtf is he doing? Standing behind a podium with a stick conducting a bunch of old-timer jazz musicians? (Hey YOU Trumpet guy, Play a really weird scale right now!!).

Only heard the singles so far.

The one with Kendrick Lamar is awesome, though FlyLo seemed to have changed it a little bit for the final version and I prefer the 1st version

The other one he put on soundcloud is boring. Kinda expected more from him. There's like one moment in the track where it gets really cool and grandoise, but other than that it's pretty much some ok jazz singing over deep subbass.

Very much this. I love jazz, been playing around with it for almost a decade.. Only halfway through it so far but I am LOVING it. A lot more than UtQC. Haven't given Cosmogramma a fair shot, but I'm getting blown away.

Also not sure which track it is (i think it's 'Stirring' but all the reversed guitar work is just screaming early Bibio).
