Twin Peaks: The Series and its References

Very VERY mild spoilers for the show here...

Also, I'm curious as to what general opinions are here of season two. I'm watching through now, and, though I'm really enjoying it, the show goes through quite a big tonal change after the Laura Palmer storyline, with the soap opera parody seeming - for a time, at least, take precedence over the darker, weirder, mystery with which the show tends to be associated.

I've not finished watching season 2 yet (5 or 6 episodes left, I think) and it seems to be, at this point, just showing more signs of returning to the darker territory. Thoughts?

The show definitely has a change of mood in Season 2. A lot of people seem to not be too impressed with the direction the show went in, mid (ish) season 2, but I still really enjoyed it up to the end. I wouldn't call it darker really though. It gets stranger ( if that's even possible ) in my opinion. And while dealing with more kind of occult-y themes, I think it's a bit more light-hearted actually than the 'who killed Laura Palmer' story arc, but I don't wanna ruin anything for anyone, so that's all i'll say.

The film is darker than the show too, but not by much. You should check that out after the show.

The first time I watched the series I didn't mind season 2 too much, but the second time around I found more than two or three things appallingly bad, especially that Richard Tremayne stuff, or when that biker guy runs away, or the thing with the restaurant reviewer. There was enough Cooper weirdness though, so I kept watching.

The scene in DaveJ's avatar is pretty bad too...

I've seen the film and liked it... at that time, from the perspective of someone having seen season 1 and a tiny amount of season 2 (stopping because of my dissertation). I didn't concentrate on it completely fully (partly cause I felt a bit of a 'third wheel' while we were watching it -- watched it with my friend and his girlfriend who I'd pretty much just met, haha), but yeah, it is more like a Lynch film than it is like much of Twin Peaks (which I'd suggest was a major contributing factor to its muted reception, and furthermore to the fact that there are then some (Mark Kermode, for example) who regard it as his best work) -- I remember it being very weird, and more openly exploring some of the darker themes of the show, and I remember loving one particular scene, just for the marriage of sound and visuals (paraphrasing Lynch, there, I think).

Definitely want to watch it again, properly, though. Gonna score that DVD soooon.

Another post on this thread from moi.

Just watched the episode where they go spelunking in Owl Cave. Many good things about that episode, not only for pushing forward a bigger plot (the show's hit-and-miss when it's all about the smaller plots, even though I have enjoyed most of them, but I think Windom Earle (even though he can be a tad OTT) and what branches from that sort of gives a bit of much-needed focus), but also for Gordon Cole just being hilarious.

Also, to elaborate a bit on the references side of the thread, I thought I'd introduce a few of you to a band I came across on Soundcloud called Above! Convenience Store ( http://soundcloud.com/above-convenience-store )... lot of Twin Peaks references / samples in their work (especially on their Gasfarming EP -- http://aboveconveniencestore.bandcamp.c ... farming-ep), and they're good at getting that sort of creaky, pastoral mood across, too (comparisons with Grouper and Mt. Eerie can be drawn with this respect, too).

Sorry to triple-post.

But I watched the last episode (for the first time) last night. I'm kind of sad because I'll never be able to know exactly how it must have felt to have seen that actually broadcast on television for the first time.

As much as I enjoyed the series in its entirety (even taking into account the less focused bits of season two, which nevertheless had great moments alongside some of the more sort of pointless, dull parts), you can see the difference when Lynch is behind the camera. Brilliant and creative use of visual effects (for example, the simplistic superimposing of the red curtains onto the dark woods could easily be done wrong, but just really worked brilliantly) and sort of evocatively awkward camera positioning. The Black Lodge is truly nightmarish (in terms of both being notably dreamy and terrifying (had to switch the bedroom light on during one particular moment. I'm 21)) -- skilfully directed, though kind of hard to accurately describe in words (interesting to read about Lynch's changes made to the original script, which are very welcome, from the sounds of things).

Need to pick up Fire Walk With Me soon and watch it again. Got to absorb as much of the town as is available.

I cant wait.. 2016 is just too far.

I too have just started my yearly run through of the series, does anyone else relate Twin Peaks to the Autumn time? For some reason, for me, it is the best time of year to watch it, it makes it so much more atmospheric for some reason. The same goes for anything medieval or alien based viewing... Its so much better in the Autumn.

Also V, I think that is because most or all of the show seems to have been shot in autumn. Autumn is pretty much my favourite time of the year for the outdoors.
