2001 A Space Odyssey - Re-released in UK Cinemas Nov/Dec

Kudos to bkillsb for flagging this up.

The greatest movie of all time? The greatest single leap in cinema since (certainly Sci-Fi cinema) since Lumiere? Years ahead of it's time? The inspiration for pretty much every science fiction movie since? Kubrick's standout work in a career of masterpieces? Perfection?

Not for me to say. All I'll say is that it will fulfill a lifetime's dream to see this as it was intended, ie. on the big screen

New trailer literally had me welling up with excitement!

I guess at my local cinemas, it will not be showing on 35mm, so so I don't see a point going to watch a digital on the big screen, if it will be shown at all, is this a UK only?

This is great news, mainly because ive only ever seen little bits here and there. Its something ive never gotten around to watching all the way through. Now I get to experience it for the first time in the cinema

Its funny, I was talking film with two friends on my course today, who are pretty clued up on cult and alternative cinema/cinema outside the mainstream... I mentioned this was being screened, immediately after a discussion of how great Tarkovsky is... and neither of them seemed bothered? I was flabbergasted.

Seems legit.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey is as mainstream as you can get.
2. IMO it's Kubrick's worst movie, at least in terms of narrative-atmosphere fit. Also, the narrative is gratuitously long-winded (although this could also be a passive-agressive commentary on Beethoven which brings us to our next point...)
3. Stylistically it's identical to Clockwork Orange. Makes sense, you don't just waste such a painstakingly researched visual style on a movie which will be forgotten in 200 years max.
4. Clockwork Orange is 2001: A Space Odyssey Part II. Why?
4.1. Alex is a HAL9000 "in the wild."
4.2. Both are about violence and (re)education.
4.3. They both use the same graphic style (white plastic, bright colors, diffuse lighting, wide spaces etc.)
4.4. They both use music to highlight the motivations of the characters which constructed the things we see on the screen (Beethoven on one hand and the axis defined by The Blue Danube on one hand and the one that's called Daisy

Does something unpopular/"underground" automatically have more artistic merit?
