Their 2012 release.. Mladic is 20 minutes of pure, unadulterated, bliss.

I like Explosions in the Sky. They're a little more indie-film-soundtrack-y, but in a good way. And they put a hell of a show on in Mobile, Alabama a couple years back. Hoping they come back soon.

well, id like to thank you for making this thread. because i just put on "God Is An Astronaut" and forgot just how powerful their music is.

I also love Godspeed (even Japanese copyists Mono are pretty cool), but my favourite post-rock masterpiece is still 'Come On Die Young' by Mogwai from 1999 (back when they were really good). A proper slow-burner/builder of an album with loads of atmos, great tunes, and progressively more intense noise outbursts all the way through.

For me, "post rock" (whatever that is) has never gotten much better than Mogwai. I've tried getting into bands like Explosions in the Sky, but no matter how picturesque and grandiose they can get, they lack the edge and the inventiveness of their grandaddies. Mogwai Young Team and EP+6 are my favourite releases, with high marks for Mr. Beast and Rock Action.

The only band that rivals them to me is Sigur Rós, which also indirectly "invented" the label. The untitled album and Tákk... have been part of my very existence since the very day I discovered them, in 2004 or so.

I haven't heard much Tortoise, but Millions Now Living Will Never Die is brilliant. Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a mixed case. They have moments of utter brilliance mixed with moments when I actually feel they're testing how obnoxious a group of human beings can possibly get.

On the more metal side of things, though, Isis is excellent. They are like Mogwai in the sense that labelling them as "post rock" always feels inadequate, because they've carved a niche of their own. Every time I listen to them, I'm impressed somehow.

Yeah it's a pretty unreal song (re: Yndi Halda). Finally crossed seeing Mogwai off by bucket list this last summer. Awesome awesome awesome. They played mostly stuff off of Rave Tapes and HWNDBYW which I wasn't as familiar with but they killed it. They ended up encoring with Yes! I am a long way from home...so that was worth it alone.

For anyone who hasn't explored them yet, everyone knows to check out Mogwai Fear Satan, but I'd say Ratts of the Capital is one of their best songs really, especially for being buried in the middle of Happy Songs.

Everything they do best in one tune. Around the 4 minute mark is one of the best live music moments I've ever experienced.

A mate of mine once said of Mogwai "they sound like Metallica tuning up".

I've always thought Jakob were sorta underrated.
These guys are from New Zealand and their latest album is their first in 8 years, and it's really excellent:

Just tremendous, they were my post Radiohead band and seeing them live was jaw dropping. Last tune had one of their drummers walking through the audience with a snare drum draped marching style.

BoC are Tortoise fans. they once said in an interview they think touring on the same bill as them would suit their music.

also, post-rock is kind of a silly term i think but there is a unique band from Japan I recommend called The Boredoms.

I love July Skies, particularly 'Where The Days Go' and 'The Weather Clock'. They're very closely associated with Epic45 (they play on each other's records and live), who I would recommend checking out as well.
