Complicated question. I'll never be able to pick a fav. They blend homemade drum samples, live percussion, live drums and analog drum machine sounds in a way that's extremely unique and complex. Impossible to pick a fav, maybe one day, not today.

That live track at the end of the atp recording for the intricacy. You know, the one with the vocoder/computerized voices.

To this day, the break they play on 1969 still gets me. The cymbals on it just make me feel it may be the most perfect lower-tempo break in electronic music. And the drums on Peacock Tail make a close second, purely based on the fact that they're so simple, but they add a brilliant contrast (ie not too much) the instrumentation, while still retaining a subtle, non-abrasive timbre, repetitive enough to not try to draw attention away from the lush pads and guitar.

IMO the best is "an eagle in your mind". The intracacies are subtle, the rhythms in the last half of this track definitely have the feel and the swing of live percussion; they complement the track simultaneously adding something to it without overshadowing it. Best percussion by a mile and a bit.

There's a rarely mentioned b side that comes in close second. Chinook on the b-side of the Aquarius demo. (The one with the horribly out of key sample). Skam clearly pushed for the sort of demo you could get away with spinning in a club (altho to the detriment of korona and trapped) so you hear autechre-style drum sequencing alongside the track towards the second half ... But miles better, and more tasteful. Its really good, well worth a listen and if you have a kit or a pad well worth playing along to if you wanna understand the different kinds of rhythm you can play along with.

Actually, with regards what I just said. It's weird - compared with what we know to be the demos they sent to skam (afot etc etc) the skam demos are really sloppy. I honestly get the feeling there was a huge pressure on them from skam to do stuff they didn't necessarily enjoy, hence settling with warp. The demo tapes are so much better in terms of musicality (production aside) compared to the various skam demos that I find it difficult to believe the skam demos (excepting hi scores) are genuine reflections of what they wanted to produce at the time.

An old teacher of mine loved campfire headphase after I gave to her, so she asked for recommendations for their next release that she should buy. I said mhtrtc. This is the track she said was a standout favorite. This is also coming from someone who mostly listens to classical and folk, sings in a choir and listens to bugger all heavily electronically produced music.

I think that says it all really. There is so much going on in this track, little rhythms beneath the surface, melodies and samples fluttering, circling around your head. Bird calls, little snatches of syllables, individual percussion tracks which wander independently, then the next moment coalescing together to create a feeling of varied motion. It is really disorientating and beautiful.

Speaking as a drummer (and considering my username) I love the drums in Peacock Tail.

So deft and light, they have a Steve Jansen quality about them.

rodox video, it is nice and simple and does what it does well, it is a bit lacking tho. I feel like there are loads of tunes on some of those demo tapes where the percussion is just the same basic loop unprocessed straight out a drum machine and a couple suffer for it. Worst being 5-9-78. Controversial opinion to some people I guess, but the drums utterly ruin that track for me when it could be damn near perfect. After a few minutes of the same thing over and over again with no subtlety at all, I just wanna turn it off like "SHUT UP NOW".

does that mean the drums themselves are actually manipulations of vocal recordings?
