Agreed. I honestly think this is a generational thing. We've discussed it many times, but those of us who recall life before the internet seem to have much less of a problem with this than those that have grown used to getting their entertainment on demand.

Whether we like it or not, they aren't our performing monkeys. They owe you the square root of nothing. They offered a product, we purchased it. Very, very few of us on this forum, I would guess none in fact, own Old Tunes legitimately. We all acquired them by dubious means. Think about how they might consider that when pondering whether to bother with the fabled BOCset. If it was me, I'd be inclined to think sod it and not bother.

I don't think I've said that they owe us...it's just that they should release some tracks to keep us entertained during the wait for the next LP/EP. What I would give to hear the acustic version of MHTRTC!

Releasing a boxset is not "playing the game". We WANT the boxset and we've been begging the band to release it for a long time. It's not a cash in- personally, I WANT to give 'em the money. And if they don't care about it and don't want to play the game, why not release at least Old Tunes/Boc Maxima in FLAC/WAV for free?

The motivation has been there for 10 years, it's just that BoC don't want to push the red button. MDG said in the post taken from WATMM that BoC had been talking about releasing their old stuff for a long time and there's still nothing we can spend our hard stolen monies on

This is something we've been asking for a long time and after more than 10 years they're like "no lol". I want to give 'em the money for the boxset, but I am not just a cash machine- and I kinda feel like one every time I listen to old BoC. I like the band but there are limits to my, and I think to your patience too. I'm tired of listening to the shitty MP3s and FLACs made out of MP3 files.

To be honest, I've bought cheaper albums which were just as enjoyable to me as BoC.

Why? Even if some people won't buy it, many people will. Look at the demand the represses were met with (although if the bocset's release will be just as bad, then I'll pass lol). BoC actually got me into buying CDs

True, in these days of Facebook, Twitter etc. folks seem to want to reveal everything about themselves and expect everyone else to do the same. Makes me feel old! I still need a bit of mystery, the slow reveal.
A couple of years felt like a lifetime to me in my teens and early twenties whereas now it's the proverbial blink of an eye, so I guess there's that as well, in terms of the time between releases.

You see, there's that word again. 'Want'. I want a Ferrari but I've no devine right to that either. I truly believe some people are so used to being spoon fed their desires it becomes all the harder to accept when they're denied something. Its not a criticism per se, its an observation of a shift in our culture. I've talked about the book, 'The End if Absence' by Michael Harris' and its one I'd recommend anyone read.

That's quite a statement. So because they wont sell or give away something somebody wants, they aren't allowed to express their annoyance if somebody steals it? That doesn't make sense.

They're a band. It's music. No one's life is hanging in the balance of BoC's release decisions, so this entire line of argument revolving around the word "want" is meaningless shaming.

No, they don't need to do anything. But it sure as hell would be nice to have such a treasure trove made available.

Not sure what you mean by shamming, sorry.

I agree it would be nice. But I've still heard no coherent explanation as to why an artist should allow access to material unless they want that access to be granted.

If we think like that, then BoC should be happy with what they get. They make a living even with all the piracy, so why would they want more? They can afford every synth there is

I agree mexicola.
Everyone wants everything for free, press a button and its yours.I will admit I am probably a good deal older than most people on here and if there was no internet tomorrow I would get on fine, would,nt miss it at all, same deal as before, buy the vinyl/cassette/cd and wait until the next release or trawl the record fairs looking for all the bootlegs/unreleased stuff which people always managed to get hold of and put out there. Now that was fun, you never new what you were going to come across.
I imagine there is quite a lot of musicians in our little community and if you make the choice of doing it for a living then I believe you are entitled to get something back from it. Nothing is ever really for free in our society.
I bet the brothers are reading all this and laughing their balls off . Buckie high is an Anthem.

I'd like some more old tunes, but I wouldn't want them doing what Richard is doing. Building up all this mystical legendary tension, I really hope they don't spoil that. That would be like Alien ending like a Scooby-Doo episode, or finally meeting your idol only to find out its a complete prick. I'd rather stay tense in the dark while they tickle me with treats and keep me thirsty.

That said...if they'd feed us snippets of old tunes through some trippy alternate reality game where you never catch the dragon...

Still not understanding your argument Naj? They should be happy for what they get?? How do you know what they can or cant afford? Even if your assumption is correct, why should they, or any other person give you something purely because you demand it?

EDIT: Sorry, I realise most people are tired of this. Maybe I'll back out and let Naj take the last word.
I'm just genuinely interested in this cultural schism that appears to exist today between those that genuinely seem to think they can demand things and the other camp that seems astonished by what, to them, seems a little crass. It really does seem like a pretty stark gulf in attitudes.

TBH as much as I would love to spend a weekend going through whatever the BoC equivalent is, their tape archive or whatever, I'd far rather they held onto it till the right time. Unlike Aphex, who pretty much put this stuff out because it was "dead", never likely to surface in any other way and in his own words he'd "rather be working on new stuff", BoC are the kind of act where anything in that archive has a chance of being useful. Sample that turns up here? That's from over there. Unfinished track from their very early days? That's just become "New Seeds" (or whichever we agreed it was ;) )

They designed an entire ARG, interacted with listeners and a fan community.
They released a new record, after much speculation.
They repressed all the old vinyl so we could all buy copies at a reasonable price.

That's a lot of creative work, as well as a ton of business work. We saw how long it took for them to get new pressings of Hi-Scores in our hands...

Saying an act doesn't care about the fans because they aren't consistently active and doing every single thing a fan wants them to do is a ridiculous, even offensive statement. We'd all like the old tunes, we'd all like some new tunes too...but they don't owe us. They'll release their projects and art when they feel it best suitable for them.

Creativity doesn't run on a fan's schedule.

Hell, 90% of us here are musicians, we all know that creativity doesn't run on our OWN schedule.

Simmer down.

who is this aphex twin guy?

and why do people assume that BoC owe us something?

they do what they fucking do. sometimes it sucks when there's like 7 years between albums. they dont want to release their old shit, because its not what they consider good shit. simple as that.

also, the BoCxset was ruined because all the old tracks being released online.

and as stated above... we got the whole TH and the game leading up to it, and repressed vinyl (even though that was a major cock up) so we should be pretty goddamn happy for a while! Im sure an EP will be out there in the coming years, but dont expect anything and it will come as a happy surprise

Goddamnit I cant edit my post any more....

I missed the part erarlier when naj said he doesnt really feel like the "owe" us. But thats definitely the vibe youre giving off. And thats just asking BoC to change what they are. Maybe we will get lucky with a track like 747 again. But dont try to tell them how to release their own music, or who it would make happy. That's just childish.

wow. my original post had lighthearted intentions. this is stupid guys, im not saying anyone owes us fans anything, i just think it would be beyond amazing if BoC decided to upload some old tracks on soundcloud... that's all. mods go ahead and close this if you want.
