Promoting music/etc on Twoism: YOUR views needed please.

In defense of (albeit mild) censorship, it would be prudent to remember that this isn't just a public space. This is a forum that models itself after a certain theme and atmosphere. The question is whether we want our community to reflect this kind of thing. I'd argue that a large proportion of self-promotion threads with few views and even fewer replies doesn't really make us look good. I'm not sure if we have that much of a problem; I don't frequent This Random Sound as often as I probably should. But, that's how I feel.

Ideally, I'd say Twoism is a place where community members are here as members first, artists second.

I might be a newcomer myself, but I like the idea of me not being able to post anything I have done (unrelated to BOC and the threads, of course) until I gain some credibility. I just seems right that somewhere should be verified as an active and reasonable user before they go posting THEIR OWN stuff on a forum that is specifically NOT ABOUT THEM. Also, the moderation could keep things from getting too out of hand on threads related to self-promotion. Just my opinion.

I do have music that I might share at some point, but I've not been here long so I'm not ready to yet. I'd hate to come across as one of "those" guys. At the same time, if there is going to be a degree of moderation on these self-promoting threads, how would it be decided? Would it be judged on relevancy? Or quality control? It's a difficult one.

I'm here primarily because I love analysing music, and BoC are one of those artists that are ideal for that. I wouldn't share anything until I had a better idea of what the place was about.

To answer that specific question, I cant imagine ever moderating a thread based on the quality of music being offered. That would be impossible as highly subjective.

Naturally, any linking to Moby or Lilly Allen are exceptions to the rule. (I jest. Sort of..)

With all that's been said, I'm still in agreement with IanRedpoint. We without a doubt are self-moderating. I think the consensus is a non-issue unless "relevant to twoism" means something else past the point of just being part of the community. Doesn't even need to be on a regular daily, weekly basis. A lot of great users who only have 300 posts or so over three years. Just need to be a twoismer in some capacity and not promote things more than necessary.

I have lots of of music but I don't want to put up a link on twoism, but others should be allowed to put up their links if they wish to do so. if you don't happen to be interested and are only here for everything BOC related then don't click, if your are curious and love finding something new then click away,you never know what you will come across... there is some interesting stuff out there. I don't think we should have any censorship in the community towards another artist's creativity.
I thought everyone had heard the Autechre/Lily Allen remix she has made a good job of the remix,the new vocals are... well! im lost for words to describe it.

I have been on this forum for almost 10 years. There have been times where I make music, post it, and it gets completely ignored. Then, somebody new shows up, posts their music, and suddenly everyone is foaming at the mouth.

It has been frustrating, but in the long run, some great music has popped up here from time to time.

I always thought it would be great if there was an official Twoism Records. We have the compilation series. How about all artists who are affiliated with that can be part of a record label? Then, those artists would somehow get... err... top billing? More cred? More promotion? I dunno.

I don't know. I personally am not really bothered, however that's because I really don't come here for those threads. 99% of my viewing and discussion stays within the Boards of Canada forum. I can't even keep up with my soundcloud feed, and I'm lazy, so I ignore most of it. I've met a lot of people within the community who keep me up to speed with the up and coming producers doing Boards influenced type work. I really don't see a problem with it anyway. I will tell you something that drives me insane though. Producers who use Boards related hashtags when the tunes aren't Boards related. I've seen this on soundcloud and a few other places. If you are good then the music will speak for itself. Sorry for getting off topic there. Cheers!

I like your ideas man. I would also like to see twoism records grow into something bigger. I think it would be real cool if we could all put together a boards of canada remix album under twoism. Not sure how that would work as it's highly unlikely we would get access to stems, but it would still be fun to create our own versions. I really enjoy some of the stuff I've heard from Helios, and think it would be cool if we all did some recreations of tunes for an album.

Personally, I lurked around these forums for years upon years before registering, and I like to think that I quickly became adept at finding topics of interest or whatever else I was seeking to discover. I absolutely ADORE this resource, so the IDEA of it being plagued by quasi-masturbatory trolls of exploitation is utterly repulsive. However, I can't remember any specific instance where I felt bothered, to any degree whatsoever, by the topic in question. A few simple clicks (in a matter of seconds) will reveal to me whether some linked mystery is worth pursuing--if it's cool, then I've gained something of value; if it's nonsense I'll forget it entirely; and if it's blatantly out of place / self-serving I'll think "what a f**king clown" and move along my merry way. For me at least, a simple signature link does the trick--I know 99% of people don't click it, but it's there, and I'm happy with that. If I felt these posts / threads were a true threat, I'd vote them into oblivion, but as it stands right now I think all is well...

I should add that I fully understand there are some significant macro-issues at play here that I'm definitely not in any position to properly analyze (do such postings have a negative effect on new membership? do they paint a misleading picture of what this forum stands for? etc.) I also admit I don't spend much time on the threads where this phenomenon seems to be a problem; I could clearly see how any user who actively listens to the links posted on the "what you're working on right meow" thread and offers substantial feedback could really be irked by this.

I want to make one thing crystal clear, though. The number of posts a user submits DOES NOT necessarily directly correlate to their respect for / appreciation of Twoism. I've but a handful of posts, but I love this place. I can't begin to summarize what a gem it remains in the dark, convoluted, corporatized, marketing-saturated webs of cyberspace. For nearly three years I came here every day, desperately anticipating a new BoC album, laughing aloud at the ever-amusing banter, without ever registering. I'm absolutely positive there's a ton of people just like that--and in many ways I think it'd be a bad idea to consider any regimen of limitation on newcomers. If they drop in only to self-promote, they'll drop their shite off and vanish--but real members will stay and contribute, and that's extremely important.

I really like some of the music that is posted on Twoism. That being said, I tend to listen to the artists that I know are frequent Twoism users, not really the people who have posted not even 10 times and put their music on here the entire time. Twoism Records would be amazing though. So much good music being made on here, I'd love that.

get back our more famous members for some promotion, do a one off single or something, get us some exposure so that we're not just releasing to a small crowd.

This is pretty much how I feel, from the point of view of a listener as I'm not an artist. If someone's posted their music, sometimes I'll listen, sometimes not, the odd time I might comment, but only if it's a forum member I recognise as a past or present poster, otherwise I won't bother because I assume they're just spamming, but it's not a big deal.
